Full Version: Demonoid has been hunted again

Sadly, one of the best Torrent servers I've... er... HEARD OF... yeah, that's it... has been hounded off the web again. Granted, this is bound to happen given the nature of what they offer but still.

I sometimes have to wonder just where the line is drawn in terms of what is legal or not. Technically speaking, they are not supplying the pirated materials directly so by that stretch of logic, they should be immune. However, if you shift the paradigm to say, owning a building that you have set up for customers to easily get in contact with crack dealers without actually supplying the crack yourself, only keeping track of who has what, where to get it and how much supply they have... well, you see the point.

I'm not against P2P logging sites, myself, but I can see how they might be a big target for corporations.

Supposedly the site will come back up though. They said that unless they hear otherwise from Deimos, the owner of Demonoid, that they will assume its coming back up after the servers are moved from Canada.

Yeah, that's what I heard too but it's still a shame. Seems to be happening with regular frequency these days.

Man, fuck the CRIA. Like seething said, they technically weren't doing anything illegal so why don't they go back to pretending that they own the world of media. >_>

The thing of it is, it may or may not be illegal according to today's law structure but that won't stop the CRIA from putting pressure on service providers to not allow a site like Demonoid to be hosted. Tactics range from threats of being tied up in court until the provider is essentially broke to white lies about the laws themselves can make the owner of the server panic and just cut the account off, rather than deal with the issue head on.
DeMoNiC
Whatever. I'm just waiting until Demonoid gets back up. You know they will.

Of course they will but that doesn't mean that it's any less important that a company or organization can use gangster tactics to get what they want.
DeMoNiC
Well, then we use hacker tactics to get wat we want. lol

oh boy, I feel scared using this site.

Using PSP-Spot or Demonoid?

So if Demonoid has supposedly broken a law/done something wrong, doesn't that put this site at risk too? I mean, here there are downloads of games, movies etc, which isn't completely legal right?

Dude, don't even worry about it.

Actually, Demonoid has not done anything wrong according to current laws. They don't host anything, they only collect information on what is available and help to tie it together. The issue is not that at all but rather that companies can lean on service providers to deny paid services to Demonoid.

But Demonoid will get past it.

Again, of course they will but the original point of this post was just the apparent juxtaposition of using what could be considered racketeering to solve the problem of piracy where the crimes cannot be proven against either party. Theoretical legal gorilla warfare.

Another case of this is the RIAA threatening ISPs to get lists of customers tied to IP addresses. Or the US government actually bribing telecom companies for the ability to set up monitoring stations right in the company's hubs.
