I have a friend who got an iPod nano today, and he says you have to convert CDs to iPod format using iTunes. He also says that there's no way to convert MP3 files that are already on your computer. Is there a way around this? Is there a mod or something to where you can use regular MP3 files instead of having to have the CD AND iTunes?

Well when my friend bought his iPod over, I downloaded iTunes and added all my existing mp3 files into iTunes library. Then you synchronize you library with the iPod and you have all your songs over. CD's must be in Mp3 format to be transferred.

He said he tried MP3s, but they didn't work.

Well, he's either an idiot or lying to you.
iPod uses .m4a (.m4p for iTunes files, the p stands for protected), and .mp3.
If you load .wma files into iTunes it will convert them to .m4a

I suppose either will work. Itunes will convert most anything to MP3s.
