Has anyone got the "three red rings of death"? Has it scratched any of your games? My cousin says that the gears or whatever that extend the disc tray have worn out. I'm thinking of buying one (mainly because of Halo 3), so I need to know these things. Has anyone had these problems?
Ash
well i dont have one but study shows the 50% or 80%(i forget which one) of xboxs break. mostly due to the RROD. so if u buy one just be ready to send it back in soon

Most of the new ones are just fine. Anything 2005 and later are bad. But its not a big deal XBOX replaces anything that goes wrong with it for free. I have had the RROD and they were great to me. I got a bunch of free stuff and a 3 year extended warranty. So for all the PS3 fan boys eat shit. I love the PS3 too but theres no reason to bad mouth the console that is in front of you....lol

its more of the other way around especially on youtube vids. xbox fans trying to shit on the ps3. even on vids about home....

i bought the 360 during the second shipment period, so around 2 weeks after initial release, and i just got the rrod 3 weeks ago, im lucky they extended the warranty. it didnt scratch my disk but from the noise it was giving off i wouldnt be surprised at it scratching a disk or 2 but as soon as i heard the noise i popped the disk tray and pulled out the game. i have also heard its not so prominent in the newer offerings but i have no statistics to back that up. but according to numbers i saw the rrod rate is closer to 20-25% not 50-60% like ash said but both numbers could be way off. the newer models use the elite board with hdmi out and are said to have fixed the problem but only time will tell.

And I am opposite xyster. I think the PS3 is going to dominate in year or two. It just came out to early for its time. And HOME will be amazing. XBOX Live is still dominating the scene but PS3 is making advancements. And as I stated, it will be the console to have in a year. But for now the 360 is a great buy and great fun!

i just got mine back yesterday. 15 days after i sent it out. plus the 3-4 days to recieve the box so total of maybe 3 weeks. they have started switching out xboxes to make it faster. i got someone elses back, i think once mine is repaired someone else that sent theirs in will get mine and so on and so forth. i got a paper saying they handled all the transfer of serials because it was definately a different xbox then i sent in. but i wouldnt be surprised at a 4-5 week wait time. from the time you call in. figure a week for the box and 4 weeks for the xbox replacement to happen.

Bullcrap. I've had mine almost one year next month. The only disc I have problems with is NBA2K7, but i'm not alone in that. I got one red ring a few weeks ago but it turned out to be nothing, a wire came loose connected to my TV.

Any unit manufactured after april 2006 supposedly corrected all known hardware problems.

#1: ventilate it.

#2: don't leave it on 24/7

#3: keep the air vents clean

#4: put it on it's side and don't stand it up. It's safer anyway cause you don't want it falling over.

#5: of course there will be failures. The PS3 at my local circuit city has broken down 5 freakin' times, and they finally stopped replacing it because of the cost. And, no, those models are show only, you can't play them unless you're concidering buying one.

#6: always remove your game from the tray before shutting down, or starting up. This helps clear the Cache and will mostly eliminate the "dirty disc" error. Otherwise you risk losing all your important game data on the HD if you do it manually.

#7: don't believe everything you hear about the failures.

#8: buy an extended warranty like I did. for the next year I can take it back to CC and have it replaced immediately if it fails. It's better then having MS do it, and probably cheaper.

#9: it's still way better then the PS3. If they'd just add an internet browser or youtube streaming capability. But, then again, if we had IE on it we'd need updates every 10 seconds because of it's flaws.

#10: Xbox live may be full of assholes and little brats who think they rule, but mostly it's got cool people.
