ArthurK
I seem to be confused how these disks seem to hold 50gb. Someone estimate how much each game would freakin cost.! blink.gif
ArthurK
Btw, will all the new ps3 games be on these disks. 50gb of Metal Gear sounds really awsome lol!
SaiyanDide
Games are probably going to stay around the same price but we will have to wait to know for sure. Just because the game discs can hold that much info dosn't mean they will use it all.
ArthurK
But, this is actually a good thing because game devolopers can make there game as long as they please. And longer games are good so they dont get borring quick.
SaiyanDide
Oh yea but just think what they might do with that much room for a final fantasy! Ohhhh got goose bumps again.
Kerf
Yeah.. it's like 54 gigs....

wich is..... WOW!, My Brain A Splode!! crazy.
Chouonsoku
Blu-Ray discs will cost cheaper to produce then CDs and DVDs. So, BR-Rs and RWs (Blu-Ray write and rewritable) will cost much less then a CD-R or RW.
SaiyanDide
Yea but the games will still have a $50 price tag atleast.
asw7289
And xbox 360 games will be like $80 0.o

If you're wondering how these discs can hold 54 gigs dual layer, A single-layer disc can fit 23.3GB, 25GB or 27GB.
A dual-layer disc can fit 46.6GB, 50GB or 54GB.

It uses a violet lazer to read the discs, instead of red. Red is the shortest wavelength, while violet is the largest.

Blu-Ray.com

Im not 100% on what I just said, anyone wanna double check me?
Sculay
yer but imagine GT Vision will use all of it btw not all games will use all of the space like wipeout pure its 400-500b and the disc size is 1.8 gigs
and i cant wait for this to release btw is this the concept pics of the ps3 or the final release of it

EDIT : i think i now why microsoft called it the xbox 360 pay 360$ and u get a cardboard box with 360 written on it :S
SaiyanDide
lol yup
Chouonsoku
Haha good one.
djp
xbox 360 isnt using a blu-ray or hd format on there system, the ps3 is. I image most games will still ship on dual layer dvdr though, 9 gb... 50 gig of a game is quite a massive game and we wont see those games for a few years down the road. blu-ray writers have been out for ages already i remember looking at them when i was like 14 or 15, and the discs were $30 for blanks. japanese guys get all the cool shit early
Chouonsoku
Um... djp... I don't know what you are talking about because Blu-Ray is still in production. There are no writers or readers or Blu-Ray discs for sale in Japan right now. Blu-Ray discs are still in development.
SaiyanDide
Im taking bets on who is right any takers? Anyway I did a little searching and all I could finsd was THIS but it is still a prototype. So I don't think there are any ones out yet. huh.gif
Chouonsoku
That's because there aren't. Blu-Ray, much less the discs, isn't even completely finished in development. Think of it as an open beta for technology. The Blu-Ray discs still have a ways to go before we'll see anything real from them.
ArthurK
So this means no warez in ps3 for a long long time. laugh.gif
Chouonsoku
Well not necesarilly. The UMD was a new format and we were able to pull it off. With the connectivity to the PSP, i'm sure some exploits in the PS3 can be found through exploits in the PSP.
ArthurK
Hmmm Never though of it that way.... Btw Did you guys hear about that thing for the ps3 about the psp being the controller or something.
Chouonsoku
It won't be the only way to control it but I could see it. Wouldn't work for all games but maybe Metal Gear Solid 4 to Metal Gear Ac!d 2 or something like that. A little bit of a copy cat think of Nintendo for their GBA as the controller for the GameCube thing.
Sculay
lol no warez lol well until the burners come out then maybe ppl r gettin 2 smart these dayz and im gettin poor like ArthurK since i bought the psp left a burnt mark on my pockets well neway the blu ray has been out for ages japanese ppl get everything early cos they say fuck violence lets get better shit than US N UK ppl and dats wot they did btw i swear over there they have HD Tv's as standard like we buy normall widescreens for £500 but they get 42" hd plasmas :|

LoL!!!! Exactly! Poor like me! smile.gif
Josh
Actually Blu-Ray readers have been out in Japan. They are freaky expensive and not practical because the format was just finalized sometime last year. There could possibly be some changes like the menu system on DVDs that made the first gen DVD players obsolete. I hope that this does not happen to Blu-Ray and makes all first gen PS3s obsolete.

No, it uses a blue lazer to write instead of a red lazer (hence the name blu-ray) because the blue wavelength is smaller than the red and therefore they can fit much more on a disc.

Blu-Ray is the first disc format capable of true High-Definition Picture.... which will be capable of 1080p resolution.... now to get an idea of what that is... most Xbox games are 480p

To give you a little background on what this means

a DVD runs 480 lines of resolution in a progressive or interlaced method... with progressive technology, you get a much more defined, smooth, crisp picture... its the way the picture is read and displayed

Now price, thats kind of annoying

NO GAME not for Xbox 360 or Playstation 3 will be over $50... that is the cap on games unless they come with something additional... there is not a market for the 360 if they make all their games $80... NONE

I do this kind of shit for a living.... I can almost promise u the systems will be $300-$400 and the games will all be $49.99...

At max, $54.99 and PERHAPS $59.99 because of inflation in todays economy... that is the max though

'
Background on the technology:

Blu-ray and HD-DVD were fighting it out as to which would be the standard format for the future of Digital Video... Blu-ray kicked ass for only one reason... once Sony Developed the technology, they incorporated it into their Playstation 3 system, then they went STRAIGHT to Microsoft and worked with them to lock themselves into the winning position....

When Microsoft announced that Blu-Ray would be their standard for Next-Generation applications, they secured the market for the Blu-Ray technology...

If the Blu-Ray technology upgrades from standard 720p or 1080i resolution to 1080p resolution - a HUGE difference in the way HD is viewed will arise... the question is... who has a TV which can support that kind of resolution?

Currently, only a few TV's exist that support it:

Mitsubishi has released a 52'' LCD Projection TV to all Best Buy's in the country aswell as a 62'' DLP Projection TV which will both support 1080p...

Westinghouse has sold EXCLUSIVE rights to their 1080p TV to Best Buy...

Pretty cool shit guys, the future of Higher-Definition Television is upon us....

When 1480p resolution is released... we are looking at the cap on resolution... our eyes ... if put in a digital sense... conceive close to 1400 lines of resolution... now thats amazing... we are almost at the point that looking at a tv screen is like looking out your own damn window... smile.gif
Sculay
thanks for dat conference talk bill gates
lol
well since the UK are just bringing HD TV's i think we are gona b late for blu-ray down here sad.gif owell

Thats bull, Microsoft are supporting HD-DVD not Blu-Ray.

The fight between HDDVD and Blu Ray is still going on, Blu-Ray has not "secured the market".
pspmeup
ciaran500 - Thought exactly the same thing, seems to be a whole lot of opinions here pretending to be facts.
ashman
yea the controller thing would be cool then the standard controllers,
those blu ray discs seem amazing and think about the possibilitys
of modding and combining various emulated games onto the monster 50gb space!
tho its still early days with that so dont flame me or nethin smile.gif
btw xbox will still be cool aswell tho my opinion is that ps3 will have my vote.
well thats my 2 cents
Ruben333
U sure it' ''cheaper'' to produce??

Anyway, scientists are looking for ways to increase layers on these discs, to increase capacity even more.
shinobe
I heard a 3rd layer is possible which means blue-ray disc is possible to hold upto 75gb of Data

WOW 50 GB discs! I cant imagine that being a good thing, after all MGS came on a dvd and with 20 mins play and 5 hours of mind numbingly boring video! Remember the NES had MARIO BROS nailed at under 512k, and even though most of you prolly wouldnt admit it, i know i got a shit load more play time from that than many other HUGE games.

End of the day big storage is there for one reason, to be filled with usless crap!

the soul of MGS was always in Koji's movie like direction (and innovative gameplay) with the game. if u dont like the ingame FMV then u are totally missing the point of "MGS". For me, Playing MGS was always more the like a movie watching experience then anything.

and i have to agree...bigger doesnt mean better. Go Nintendo. Go Old Skool.

HD-DVD gets the go ahead for early next year. looks like bluray will have some catching up to do
XISO
japan rule when it come to toys but i repeat never so yore a viregen the girls ther eat thim up just me it hapend to me now im stuck with her he he got love japan fo t esy tog et gf cuse im white
yiyo
The PS3 capability to play blue ray disc is enough for me to buy the system . Remember back when DVD players came out, how expensive they were. Imagine how expensive the Blue ray players will cost. With the PS3 you will be getting an Awsome gaming machine with technology surpassing most computers out in the market plus a blue ray disc capability. It has my vote eventhoug i will still be getting an Xbox 360 when i actually find a place where they are not sold out. biggrin.gif
BLK
Yiyo in my opinion I will still wait because just like the PS2 the price will go down, and this time faster then with the PS2 I would beleave due to the supposed much bigger price tag for the PS3.
atech40
im becomind impatient waiting for this PS3
GTA_PlAyA_728
Whoa 50gb? I think GTA: San Andreas only had like 20gb of space used so seeing a game hold 50gb of space would be amazing.

Im definatly getting the PS3 but not until a couple months after its released just so if their are any problems in it they can fix it. Ill prolly get it around october cuz GTA 4 might be out by then.

EDIT: nvm i was wrong, i researched more about it and found this chart:

Joyst1ck
I think I'll stick with HD-DVD...
Dan x
Dudes, u do realize that there is a quad (4) layer confirmed 100gig OMG! yea but when u think about it, its just there 4 sho. Most of tha PS3 dev componies would only be lyke making at MAXIMUM around 20-30gig IF EVEN THAT (with exeption of GTA 4 and MGS 4 of course)
Japanese Blue -ray readers cost between $1000AUD, to $2000AUD. BLOODY OATH! It all will take time tho to tell if it will play out according to Sony. It will ultimatly come down to production price, and if blue ray is more cost efficent, then that will be the medium 4 tha future. hands down, but u hav to think about who is backing up who.
HD-DVD has Toshiba (respectable) and MICROSOFT (respectable dosen't even touch it)
All Blue ray has is Sony, with is respectible in itself, migh not be able to mass-market quick enough. Though Sony is the king of marketing, so that might compensate for the lack of funds, only time will tell
shinobe
A couple very important fact thats going to really make a huge impact on whether Blu-Ray will win or HD-DVD boil downs to cost.
Cost in terms of the media them selfs and the availability of the players. The more availability of both usually equal to cheaper prices.
No rocket science here.
No one wants to buy expensive content.

Also comes down to exclusives and content provided by the media companies.

Say Microsoft bought out the rights to ... SHREK, (The #1 Best Selling DVD Of All Time, not sure why you want to buy it again tho.) and you can only get it on HD-DVD.

something like that would make Blu-Ray look bad.

Thats more of a extreme situation. Most likely, something like that isnt going to happen.

What is going to happen is that the media company has to have confidence in the medium.

Are more people going to buy my copies of "space jerk-off 2010" on HD-DVD or on a Blu-Ray copy.
What is the ratio of HD-DVD to Blu-Ray players?

Obviously, they would want to make it for the larger audience, that isnt to rule out the possibility of companies making both a BR and a HDDVD versions but, in the long run, it is a very inefficient and costly operation to release the exact same thing, just different media.

And also, to produce these media on these disks. Will the cost be the same or will one be more costly then the other? 1 cent can make all the difference here. (5 million times 0.01 = 50k! Thats 50k extra per 5 million copies of each movie they release! If they released 20 movies, that is 1 million dollars extra because one media is .01 cent more expensive then the other.) It may not seem like a lot but these production stuff really comes down to every little detail because they are dealing with a global market and those numbers are huge.

When we are all done picking our butts and decide to hop off the fence and stay with a particular side, we'll then see who the "winner is"
But until then, it really is "anyone's game"

marketing or not, it comes down to "who's got more cash to throw around". In terms of advertising.

All of this makes a very interesting econ class biggrin.gif
And by any means, I don't have a degree in Commerce or anything like that ('m an artist, the left side of my brain exist without my knowledge), these are just some of my predictions.

(and my god. this is a old post!) blink.gif

Looking at this chart, I think one of the best features of blu-ray is the fact that its so freakin huge. Movie companies no longer have to release "double disc features" and for all those couch potatos out there, it means they dont have to switch to disc 3 to find out what happens to Ben Affleck's chin in Pearl Harbour.

Zeb1uk
Omg, this is so cool! These games are gonna be well long! Even the crappest of games will take atleast a week to complete!
DL Kratos
Cos the ps3 plays blu-rays will it not be able 2 play dvds? cos i wanna be able 2 play my DVDs and PS2 games on it!
taannerz
i think the price will still stay the same. Jus the imagine all the movies and graphics they can do with that much room. But I dont think all the games will be on these disk tho.
awilson1807
these discs must be good cos all bad games mite actually get good knw
awilson1807
does blu ray stop ps2 games and dvds workin on the ps3
viperxbx2
blue ray disks are predicted by some to be as much as 80 dollars
and who ever said xbox 360 games are going to be 80 dollars needs to know his facts. why would the same type dici be 30 dollars more.
