My mini-rant is that there is not enough negative crap here in the Rant & Rave section. I come here to listen to and support those who are pissed about something trivial, I rejoice in the trials and tribulations of others. But it seems the Rant & Rave section is woefully deficient in the angry tirades department. I suppose some mean to click on compliments and then there are others who are not familiar with the phrase "rant and rave" itself. Traditionally, to rant and rave is to complain profusely about some matter which has upset you greatly, but let's look at the phrase a little more closely. First we have "rant" which thanks to the likes of Dennis Miller and Lewis Black we all understand to be an extended, usually emotional monologue dealing with the speakers incredible distaste for this that or the other, so far we are on the same page. "Rave" the second word in this phrase does not seem to fit the central theme. In our daily conversation rave is understood to describe something in a most exalted fashion, exp. "the new restaurant got RAVE reviews". WTF? Now this phrase would seem to cover two different areas, to be able to both complain and praise. The more I write this the more confused I become so let us look up these words.
Rant: "A rant is a widespread and distinctive phenomenon of emotional speech or writing in the form of a series of complaints or attacks, about a topic of interest, many times political in nature. Rarely, rants express great praise, defending an idea or a person from attack."
ok, that didn't help at all
Rave: "an all-night dance event where DJs and other performers play rave music and other types of electronic dance music."
I freakin' hate Wikipedia, let's try again
Rave:
1. to talk wildly, as in delirium.
2. to talk or write with extravagant enthusiasm: She raved about her trip to Europe.
3. (of wind, water, storms, etc.) to make a wild or furious sound; rage.
–verb (used with object)
4. to utter as if in madness.
–noun
5. an act of raving.
6. an extravagantly enthusiastic appraisal or review of something.
7. Chiefly British Slang. a boisterous party, esp. a dance.
–adjective
8. extravagantly flattering or enthusiastic: rave reviews of a new play.
hhmmmm, according to that I'm in a constant rave state. Let's see the definition of the entire phrase
Rant & Rave: "Talk loudly and vehemently, especially in anger, as in There you go again, ranting and raving about the neighbor's car in your driveway. This idiom is a redundancy, since rant and rave mean just about the same thing, but probably survives on account of its alliterative appeal."
Now it all makes since, I think, hell I don't even know anymore. All I know is that I now have a headache, I have completed a semi-successful rant, and that we are one post closer to keeping our beloved shout box open. Just check out the length of this post and all those great big words...
