Full Version: 10 Reasons Not To Own A PSP

You like to play video games, huh? If only you could play them anywhere instead of being stuck at home. Well, with Sony’s PSP you can take it with you, but there’s a price – a BIG one.And frankly, for what Sony is charging for the privilege to play Gran Turismo and other games in the car, the back of a lecture hall or even the great outdoors, I think you’re better off without it.

I’m not comparing PSP strictly to other portable games and video players. I’m simply saying that you should wait for a company to come up with a handheld that won’t end up costing as much as a decent home entertainment system. (Buy an entertainment system instead and you’ll prefer staying home to play games).

Below are the top 10 reasons I think you’re better off saving your money or spending it elsewhere:

10.The screen is tiny relative to the detail of the games you’re playing, making it difficult to play the more visually complex games. It’s sometimes hard to follow the action, particularly in first-person games, because things are moving off your field of vision.

9.The contrast settings are too limited and you are often battling glare.

8.The screen gets marked up very easily and is prone to scratching. A scratched screen does not help when you are trying to get the bad guy.

7.The biggest gripe I have (that will carry into the next several reasons) is that Sony is ripping you off. You spend at least $199 on the PSP and then you have to immediately buy a memory stick to be able to even play a game.

6.Sony knows they’re ripping you off. For $250, they will gladly sell you a memory card (32 MB) and a lovely carrying case along with the PSP. But why would you spend the extra $50 to get a 32 MB card from the Sony “value pack,” when you can buy a 256 MB card separately for $40?

5.None of your current PlayStation games will work. You will need to buy all new games. With games retailing for about $40, you’d be spending $200 to buy just five – a meager collection.

4.If you want to play movies, you need to spend even MORE money. You could choose to spend all your spare time converting movies manually on a PC but then you would need to buy a program to convert your current DVDs into a format that the PSP can play.

3.You also need to buy memory cards to save those movies (in addition to the one you had to buy to be able to play a game).

2.The unit is too small and there are too many buttons spaced closely together for an adult to play without getting aggravated. Of course, you could spend more money to buy the grip extensions. If you haven’t been put off by anything I’ve said so far, then at least buy the PSP accessory kit that includes a magnifying glass (to enlarge that small screen), headphones, speakers, the grip extensions and more for $40.

1.Ok. So you wanted to be able to take the gaming with you, but how portable is it really? Think of all the stuff you have to lug around – the unit, games, etc.

Bottom line — For the money you’d spend on a PSP, conversion program, memory sticks, movies and games (nearly $500), you’d be able to buy a Dell laptop (base model going for $485) or you'd be more than halfway towards a decent laptop. And the laptop can be used for more than just games and movies.

THIS IS KINDA OLD BUT THIS CAN BE AN EYE-OPENER FOR SOME OR JUST ANOTHER HATER COMMENT FOR MOST.

Firstly, so you want to play tetris then? The screen is fine for me. Most people praise the screen and its quality. So I think youre in the minority here.

How many people are honestly walking around in the sunlight trying to play their psp?

As with most screens in general. Buy a screen protector. Its like $5.

A new psp cost $169. They arent ripping you off. Technology cost money. If you dont like that, quit now because it only gets more expensive.

The value pack now comes with like a game, movie, and 1 gb stick. Buy the core if it bothers you so much.

So you want a handheld the size of a cd so it can play youre old playstation games? Come on now. Its a new type of system, its not meant to be an extension of the ps1 or ps2.

Actually there are plenty of free programs that do that. Plus, movies cost money, always have. Thats not an argument.

Still not an argument. You dont have to convert movies. If you want to, buy the card. If not dont.

Too small? The only thing they should have done is add a second nub. That would make things more comfortable. Other than that it fits the hands pretty well. Ever hold a ds? Damn thing is square, talk about not conforming to the hands.

The psp and a game case if you really need it. Honestly that really not a lot of stuff. Pretty portable if you ask me. I bring it a lot of places no problem.

Bottom line. The psp is a good deal if you want a portable gaming system that can do other things like movies, photos, etc.

On top of that, a $500 laptop is really not high quality and wont last you that long if you want it for gaming, etc. Plus its not nearly as portable as a psp that can fit in your pocket.

Your asking for so much trouble posting this here, the majority of users will automatically be negative about what you have posed. Nevertheless, i do agree with some of the points that text raised. However, theres 20 reasons why you should own a PSP,- and this site and its content being one of them.

The only two things i don't like about the PSP is the higher FW like HK88 said, and its impossible to play in broad daylight, or a long drive without tinted windows if you have the sun spot.
Bizzle™
Lmao obviously hes going to be beaten around a 100-1 everytime on a psp site.

I own more than just a psp cps i do personally think it would get boring just playing psp.

There not that exspensive, i see it as kinda cheap for how much for you can get out of it.
DEvok
I think this should be in the rant and rave section.

Lets talk about the PSP in the terms of its competitors and the other things you can buy for its price. The only one on the Market is the Nintendo DS Lite, I brought one as it was hip to have one these days and guess what.It was so stupid and simple that after two days i could not bring myself to use it anymore
and Switched back to my PSP.The beauty of this little marvel is that it does almost everything that
you would expect it to do for its size (Unlike the DS) and is DEFENITELY worth the extra $40 that people pay
for it over the DS.

Could you tuck your laptop into your Pocket ???
Can you play games on your Pocket PC ????
Browse your pictures on the DS ???
Surf the Net on the Ipod ???

There is nothing in the market that does all the things that we expect from the PSP,So there could never be
a replacement for it today.Unless Sony comes out with a new one.
HK88
Now that you can downgrade from any firmware there is absolutely no reason not to get one smile.gif

LOL I posted this here for us, PSP supporters, to prove it wrong. Not create negative things. You should sometimes ponder too why bought your PSP and not Nintendo DS.

I beg to differ. That doesnt sound at all like someone trying to prove support for the psp. You clearly stated why we should save our money or spend it elsewhere...
