i heard earlier that sony allow you to run linux on the ps3. what advantages does this provide as i am going to invest in a ps3 myself very soon hopefully

Well your ps3 will look like a pc with linux. Its quite cool actually

Basically what HK said. Your ps3 can boot up like a computer and you can use it for computer functions. Plus it has a better web browser, but thats a small detail.

so there isnt much of an improvement really as i will have a computer next to my ps3 for the internet

Well if they are next to each other then dont bother with it. But still it does look cool
