It’s made its debut earlier than we expected, but Apple just dropped the mother of all Macs – a pro desktop machine packing a whopping eight processing cores to chew through digital video and graphics like no other.
Putting the Mac-daddy on sale through their online store this afternoon, Apple cheekily state “Consider the bar officially raised.”
We can’t help but agree with them. This processing powerhouse crams in two Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Clovertown” processors, peaking at 3.0GHz.
It’s a dream machine for video editors, with video card options from ATI and Nvidia pumping out eye-popping pictures from the rear.
It’s yet to make an appearance on Apple’s UK store, but the US shop has it listed with a starting price of $2,500. Now all we need is a shiny new operating system to run on the beast.

That out be an "oct-core" computer. The new mac has TWO quad-core processors. Kind of reminds me of the Playstation 3's 8 cores....

Dude...its not apple, just because it features in an apple pc it does not mean its apple whos responsible for it, sure they might have assisted. Dont forget these CPUs wont be any good for current gaming...and really like my first post said are more suited for video editing. Expect to see these CPU's in Pc's soon.

Whats the point they dont have any good games for the good graphics, to me it would be a waste of money to buy it because it has all this good stuff and all you can do is video editing. That really doesnt seem worth it to me.

Ever heard of ''apple boot camp'' which enables users to boot into either windows (xp or now even vista) and apples operating system, giving apple users choice and the ability to ''have the best of both worlds''.

only way I am ever getting a mac. with that powerhouse it would be worth it too, I could use some of the great photo editing software for the mac then play my games with the xp

Which is basically why it was made...''the best of both worlds''. Ive got to say it though windows users will get more from the mac side of things than the XP/vista side. You will probably find yourself using apples OSX more more.

if a game was optimized for multiple cores, this thing would be beastly at it. i think Doom 3 might be optimized for multi-core computers, but I'm not sure. That's the problem with multi-core computers. They don't do much unless the programmer writes code that will use multiple cores. Though if you're using Mac OS X, it will automatically try to optimize your program for multiple cores when you compile it, and it also splits tasks that it has to do efficiently between cores.

Yep yep, PC gaming is generally tailored to a single core although with the big dual core boom i think multi-core gaming is next in line. Like i said think of the ps3 it is a prime example.

Its a shame for alll those celeron users. Even the celeron D and M are vastly out of date. I would sure hate to own a celeron 2.0ghz these days, with all the talk of core duo and quad core, its users must really feel inadequate...well so they should do...the performance of that CPU sucks!!

Lol, I agree....

But then saying that: The intel celeron M and D are intel budget line of CPU's. Granted the Pentium and Pentium D could possibly now fit that role the celeron is probably the best CPU for users who just want to do some very basic Internet surfing and word processing. However, even for that task on a whole the celeron sucks.
