Backwards compatibility list released
Added on 20/03/2007.

Sony has launched a website that catalogues the games that will be backwards compatible, via emulation, on the PS3.

The 1000-plus games database lists the games in alphabetical order over PS2 and PSOne, and also includes quality of emulation to expect from each games. This list is based on the 1.6 update, so folks will have to download it before they can play these games. The site can be found here.

The most noticeable thing about the site is the games that are missing from the list, and the games that work. Below average games like BMX XXX, 50 Cent Bulletproof, Bad Boys 2, and Barbie: The 12 Dancing Princesses are present, but games like Guitar Hero (1 and 2), Okami, Metal Gear Solid 2, and Soul Calibur 2 are nowhere to be seen.

But perhaps the biggest disappointment is the lack of emulation for Final Fantasy VII, and although there is emulation for such great titles as God of War, Shadow of the Colossus, Psychonauts and both Star Wars: Battlefronts, that is not enough to deter Final Fantasy fans, who are already forming mobs to help Sony understand that they are disappointed.

All is not lost though, as the backwards compatibility list will grow as updates are released.

So the PS3 can emulate? how about Nintendo systems? Would it be possible?

The emulation is built into the sony fw so that it can "think its a ps2/ps1".

Someone making an emulator might be possible but an exploit needs to be found first to allow unsigned code to run. As of right now, its not happening yet.
