65nm CELL production starts
Added on 13/03/2007.

IBM officially announced 65nm CELL processor production for PlayStation 3 today.

The CELL processor currently in all PlayStation 3s is a 90nm chip. By making the chip smaller Sony will reduce the costs of the processor, as well as power consumption and heat dissipation.

IBM created the chip with Sony and Toshiba in collaboration back in March 2001.

Whether or not this means a price cut for the consumers, only time will tell. But we don't expect a price cut before the end of this year.

About two weeks ago a Sony executive stated that Sony would begin the 45nm chip production in late 2008 or early 2009.
