PS3 Firmware updated to v1.54
Added on 02/28/2007.
Early today, Sony released a minor PlayStation 3 firmware upgrade which will allow PS3 owners to update their consoles to v1.54. The update includes the ability to change the size of the picture of the person you're talking to, over video chat, to match the screen resolution. Sony offers a great explanation of the feature at Playstation Asia.
In v1.54, PS3 owners can now use a USB camera compatible with USB video class (UVC) for video chat. However, Sony does note that owners should contact their USB camera retailers about their model, to make sure it's compatible with the PlayStation 3.
It's questionable why Sony would offer a minor update like this right before their large March update (v1.60). Clearly there's nothing crucial about this update, and undoubtedly could have been added into the v1.60 firmware. Perhaps Sony figured that it might try and keep the March firmware download time at a reasonable length by shedding off a couple minutes with the v1.54 update. No matter, this update only gives PS3 owners that much more to look forward to in the March update.
