Comedy Central has created an original short-form Web/TV series in conjunction with Sony designed specifically to promote the company’s recently launched PlayStation 3 game console.
The new branded-entertainment series, Control Fr3aks, premiered on Comedy Central’s broadband site Motherload on Feb. 13 with a three-part episode. The series of shorts, which depict a pair of video game obsessed twentysomething roommates who frequently encounter the supernatural, will make the jump from the Web to TV on Feb. 21 with an original 60-second episode set to run during a commercial break on the long-running animated series South Park.
Over a three week period, a new episode of Control Fr3aks will run each Wednesday during both the 9:30 p.m. EST and 12 midnight episodes of South Park before eventually shifting to the Web. The show will return later in the year, as a total of four episodes of the series will be produced during each of the next three quarters, with three individual episodes running exclusively on Motherload.
As for Sony’s involvement, as part of the unique media sponsorship Control Fr3aks’ two main characters Dirk and Ryan are shown using the PlayStation 3 device along with various Sony games during episodes of the show. Sony is also running pre-roll video ads prior to the show’s online episodes. In addition, fans can download the show onto their PlayStation Portable (PSP) devices.
