At the Electronic Entertainment Expo last year, Konami revealed that work had begun on a live-action movie based on Metal Gear Solid. The news broke via a pamphlet for Studio Kojima, the Konami-owned development house headed up by Metal Gear series creator Hideo Kojima.

"I have received many offers to adapt Metal Gear Solid. It has taken a long time, but we have finally settled on an arrangement," Kojima said in a statement. "False facts aside, a movie project is underway. I have finalized a Class-A contract with a party in Hollywood."

For eight months, the identity of the aforementioned "party" was unknown. That changed this week, when Sony Pictures Entertainment vice chairman Yair Landau revealed his studio is developing the project.

"We're working with the Metal Gear guys," Landau told GameSpot following his D.I.C.E. summit keynote address in Las Vegas. "It's a very cinematic game, it really lends itself to movie telling. But the question is, 'How do you translate Snake's experience into a full arc that conforms to what audiences expect on the large screen?'"

Landau also hinted the Metal Gear Solid movie may just be the beginning. "There are other games we are looking to develop," the executive said. "We're working with one of my favorite producers right now on an idea for an EverQuest movie." The producer was apparently of such stature that Landau declined to name him. "I'll let him disclose that," he said cryptically.

Besides the forthcoming World of Warcraft film, currently in development at Warner Bros., the Metal Gear Solid movie is the highest-profile game-film project in Hollywood. Previously, that stature was held by the Peter Jackson-produced Halo adaptation, which imploded last year.

I heard about this awhile ago, and many people are apparently arguing if it should be with actors or if it should be animated as in game. Personally I think it should be CG such as MGS4 that way the actors can't ruin it and it can stay more true to the game.

CG with voice actors all the way

i guess it's alright to make a movie after a game blink.gif

they always seem to ruin the name of the game by making movies of the, especially if they're live action.

cool. maybe it will be ok?

huh.gif They got it right with Doom and Silent Hill, as opposed to Resident Evil, hopefully they will continue to make a decent job of it. Fingers crossed they don't screw it up. Who would be your pick for Snake??? That is if they went live actors?

No no, you got it all wrong. The only good movie to come out of a video game was the 199? classic, Super Mario Bros. And I don't mean good as in good, I mean good as in bad. This movie, if you are lucky enough to find a vhs copy, has aged like fine champagne in a can. Look for it on ebay if you dare, if you are so bold, if you think you can handle it's wacked out campiness. And it actually stars some decent actors. The British Bob Hoskins plays an excellent Mario, you will recognize him as Smee from the equally triumphant Hook movie. Dennis Hopper (Billy the kid from Easyrider) kicks ass as Koopa. And I can't forget to mention Luigi, aptly played by the unintelligible John Leguizamo who you will not remember from the abominable movie, The Pest.

Now, as for the Metal Gear movie, it should most certainly be live action, seeing as CG movies suck big time. There is a 50 percent chance it will be horrible, a 30 percent chance it will be halfway decent, and a half percent chance that it will be a great movie. They do have a lot of good material to work with though, although if they try to cram too much of it into one two hour movie it will not work. They should start with a 1960's Snake fighting the Soviets, not the modern stuff just yet. And please, for the love of god don't make something blow up in every single scene, or have it described as the special effects event of the year. They have a chance to make something real fucking classy here, like the games themselves.

LOL....Mario Bros that was the worst movie I ever saw! Movies to games always flop and games to movies rarely make it. Only a selected few made it so far. Good luck to Metal Gear!
