I have just brought PSP with fw 1.5. I want to play game images. I believe I need Devhook to enable me to do ths. I know I can update the firmware to 3.02 which will not require me to use Devhook?. I don't want to mess around with the firmware yet as the PSP is brand new, and I don't want the risk of bricking it.

Could someone explain how Devhook works. A few questions if i may.

1. Does Dehook run the latest game images?
2. Is there a risk of damaging the PSP when using Dehook?
3. Can Devhook be removed once installed?
4. which is the best version to use?
5. Does Devhook need to flash the PSP to install?

Thanks in advance

Firstly, welcome to PSP-Spot newgen2005.

I know you said that you don't want to mess around with firmware yet, but it would be a lot easier to just use Dark_AleX's custom firmware 3.03 OE-C. There's an Easy Installer here: http://www.psp-spot.com/forums/303OE-C-eas...ler-t33797.html
Yes there is a small risk of bricking, but as long as you read the instructions carefully, it's well worth it.

But if you really don't want to use custom firmware yet...

1. Does Dehook run the latest game images?

This depends on which firmware version you are emulating, if you have a version of DevHook (0.52 I think) that emulates 3.03 firmware, then yes it runs the latest games.

2. Is there a risk of damaging the PSP when using Dehook?

If you do not use the option to flash part of DevHook, then there is no risk of damaging the PSP when using it.

3. Can Devhook be removed once installed?

Yes, by simply deleting the files off your memory card.
However, if you did flash part of DevHook, you would have to unflash it first to fully remove it.

4. which is the best version to use?

The latest one, 0.52 if I remember correctly (since hardly anyone uses DevHook now, we all use 3.03 OE).

5. Does Devhook need to flash the PSP to install?

No it doesn't, but there is an option.
I think it's meant to speed up running the games or something (I've never used it myself).

Again, I would strongly recommend just installing 3.03 OE-C: http://www.psp-spot.com/forums/303OE-C-eas...ler-t33797.html

Here's a (non-comprehensive) feature list I wrote for 3.03 OE a while ago:
- play real UMD games (which require up to 3.03 firmware)
- play real UMD videos (and region-free)
- play ISOs (backed up UMD games) from the Game section of the XMB (and NO-UMD)
- run homebrew that uses the 3.03 kernel (put it in "ms:\PSP\GAME\", where "ms:" is your PSP memory card drive letter)
- run homebrew that uses the 1.50 kernel (put it in "ms:\PSP\GAME150\"); almost all homebrew goes here
- watch MP4 videos (put it in "ms:\VIDEO\" and it will come up in the Video section of the XMB)
- browse the web using the Internet Browser
- play PS1 games using the official Sony emulator
- preventing accidental firmware updates
- recovery mode (hold the "R" shoulder button when booting)

And you can always return to 1.50 if you want to (not sure why you would be it's an option).

Thanks for the reply adw888.

I will stick with Devhook for now. I am just a litte worried about the flash files to the PSP option. Is there a complete windows installer?

For DevHook there is something called the Ultimate Installer:
http://www.psp-hacks.com/forums/post-315470.html#p315470
But that doesn't do the latest version.

Here's a link to the latest version: http://www.psp-spot.com/forums/index.php?s...c=32273&hl=
It's not a "complete windows installer", but there's a step-by-step guide.
