Ok here's what I did, I have a 1.51 PSP from Europe and it comes with a UMD that has the 2.0 firmware on it. So I put in the disc and started the upgrade, and at the point where it said "make sure the PSP is pluged into an AC adaptor" or something like that I can't remember it word for word. It is the last point at which you can cancel the upgrade. Anyway before I continued I removed the disc and inserted the Midnight Club 3 disc and then continued. Being that it had already bypassed the version check it continued to load the firmware thinking that it was the 2.0. Now I know that this works because I tried it on three of my friends PSPs all 1.51 I tried it on mine first so I wouldn't brick theirs. And all of us can run homebrew cool! I am guessing that this will only work on 1.5x versions seeing as how you can't use the 2.0 disc to upgrade one with 2.0 already on it. I hope someone will find this helpfull.
And yes I know I only just joined this forum but that it because I only just got a psp and became interested in the hacking and homebrew stuff.

Is it possible for you to make a video of this concept in action? But alot of people have been saying this concept works, i havent actually got a UMD with 1.50 on it though. But in theory is sounds believeable.
Anyone else tried it? Or willing to give it a go!!

I would like to get a vid up to this or another site, But I need to get with one of my other friends who has not upgraded theirs yet. I am unable to do it again on mine as i don't have the 1.5x firmware and this will not work with 2.0 I am also a little worried about posting a vidio because there will be a torrent of nay sayers that will find some reason to call the video fake. Like the light was a little off in frame # whatever or many other reasons. Anyway I will ask around today and see if I can try it on another guys PSP to make the vid. If not I can always buy one do the trick and take it back to the store if need be.

Well if you just create the video with a good quality camera so we can see everything i dont think we can call it a fake. Some of the videos being posted have been awful quality so of course people are going to assume they are fake. Be good to see this concept in action though, nice find by the way!

I didn't know that I imported mine through lik-sang.com but could not get the psp imported, couldn't afford it

so I thought all versions were the same I'm sure there are other games that have 1.50 on them over here as I don't have but two games I can't say which ones have what firmware on them. The other one I have is Tony hawk and it has no firmware on it.

Sooooo sorry, I made a small mistake in the firmware number .I didn't pay that much attention to it as I already knew that it would not play the homebrew stuff like I wanted. Anyway it was 1.5x whatever I will make sure I get the version number right when I make the vid later today. Althought someone will undoughtly find flaws in that. All I know is it worked and I got my homebrew and iso loader working. reguardless of if it was 1.51 or 1.52 it is now 1.50 and I am happy and so are about 3 of my friends.
And why would you want to smell "testicles"? I guess that's your buisness

I have edited my post.
SONY said that you must follow All directions while updating and if you fail to do so
it may result in damage to your unit, therefore, if this guy swaps out disc's during
the install and the psp goes into flash mode/ and the flash is incorrect = DAMAGE !
I'll wait for the so-called' Video proof (hopefully its nice and clear)

Accually the UMD does have 1.5 on it if you look at a dumped iso image there is a folder in it called "update" and that contains an eboot file witch is the 1.5 firmware. Death jr has the same folder only a diffrent eboot file.

really?
is this the FULL update or just the text that shows up on your screen, stating you need
to update?
I was under the impression that the disc wouldn't play until you updated your psp via
sony's website?
i never knew the update was inside the game?
thanks for the info !

No prob, glad I could help my guess is that they put it on the umd for people who want to play the game and don't have access to the website at the time or the internet at all. Oh and it is the full version of the update.

It's a British saying. If you smell bollocks, it means you suspect someone of talking bollocks as it makes the air smell of bollocks as they talk.
At the moment I still think it's bollocks as things like this have been tried many times before. The firmware updater has been decompiled and there is no way of tricking it like this. It will bomb out with an error.

The 1.50 version of the firmware does not have to be very big like the 2.0 all it did was add some security features unlike 2.0 that added a web browser and the background changer. Also it may be compressed in someway that expands as you install it after all 3.5mb if kinda big for a psp eboot file.
Also when i make the vid how will i get it to you guys to see. Can I upload it to this site since i don't have a website in which to host it.

just email the vid to one of the sites MODS or the ADMIN.

When do you think you'll have another victim

, i mean test subject to
record the process?
Or you can update your psp to a 2.0 (while recording) and then use your
swap method to downgrade it to a 1.5 (while recording)
Don't worry about the lenght of the video.

I can't upgrade mine to 2.0 because if I did when I tried to do the trick and I put in the disc with the 2.0 firmware the psp would tell me I already had the latest version and there was no need to update. As for my next victim I have asked my buds to ask around and show theirs to see if there are any takers if not I will just go buy one do the vid and take it back HAHA!
"download the 1.52 firmware off the sony site if its still available, reflash to 1.52 and downgrade again on cam"

I actually think this is a good idea and it reminds me of the swaping trick for games.

One of the reasons the firmware EBOOT.PBP inside the Update folder is 3Mb is because there is also the DATA.BIN in that folder as well. EBOOT.PBP is the program that runs to check your PSP, then when it all checks through it loads the data contained in DATA.BIN to update your PSP.

If this works I'm going to look for a 1.5 Firmware game.

Sep 7 2005, 12:35 PM
Th only thing That I forgot about is I used the 2.0 upgrade disc that comes with the euro psp. As far as I know there is not a 2.0 umd out in the states is there? I guess you could start with a 1.52 disc as long as it contained a higher firmware than the one you have on the psp. Also I might try this with a memory card too. Like start with the 2.0 firmware on one chip then replace it with a chip containing 1.50 and let you know what happens.
Shihiko
Sep 7 2005, 12:38 PM
The chip method has been tested and most cases it's either a brick, or the program doesn't want to run it.
I believe this method you're using works better only because the UMD's update folder contains:
EBOOT.BIN [Program to run]
PARAM.SFO [Details to tell program what version of firmware]
DATA.BIN [The firmware itself]
With EBOOT.PBP versions, you have one whole file that contains all the files inside. Before it updates it even tries to check the file you are running with checksums.
Unless if changing the DATA.PSAR files works using the same EBOOT to start it, but I'm sure there are people who have tried that.

I am trying the test shots now I am having a little trouble getting the text on the psp screen to show up. I went outside to get better light that seems to help a little. It may take a few tries to get it right before I do the real vid since I haven't done this before and this isn't the best cam in the world. But I will make sure all is right before I post it so there won't be any problems. And I promiss no techno music in the background.
Here is a screen cap from my cam showing the sys info can you guys read the info or does it need to be more clear. THX

ok.. so lets say it takes 4 minutes to do this video.. where is it
stevenz
Sep 7 2005, 02:03 PM
1.5 firmware is 13Mb and is either a single Eboot.PBP file if by itself, or 3 files as Shihiko posted if it's on a UMD in an UPDATE folder. 2.0 is 15.9Mb and also comes as Eboot as on UMD.
As long as the whole thing is filmed in 1 shot and it's clear enough that the 1.0/1.50/1.51/1.52/2.0 (whatever) can be "kind of" made out on the Sysinfo screen, that'll do the job fine.
Could be interesting...
Pity any new UMD you buy will have a firmware newer than 1.50. Makes this trick quite hard to use, but good on ya if you can find something.
I suspect a sudden surge in sales of MC3, Coded Arms etc.
