Chris Morris at CNN/Money has an interesting theory on Sony's insistence that the Playstation 3 will “be expensive” — are they bluffing? The advantage would be twofold: first, set consumer expectation high, then surprise them with something much lower, driving a potentially much larger buying rush. Secondly, lull Microsoft into thinking they can get away with sticking an extra high pricetag on the Xbox 360, scaring off some of its potential buyers. The other potential reason for crowing about high pricing expectations might be to force Microsoft to make the first move, thus prepping consumers to get beyond the cognitive barrier of paying more than $300 for a game console. And, you know, it's not like we would be shocked and appalled to discover than Sony totally played the media on this one — what do y'all think?

If that were to really happen. Sony must have some Ninjas in their marketing team this time.

Shihiko,
i wouldnt be surprised if they have so
sony are definatly playing a GAME here(did you see the pun

)
they have already thought of the marketing strategies, and i myself think they are gonna make the price expectancy high and shock the general public by selling lower,

Ohhhh, you kids today. I'm more worried about the price of games than I am about the console. I have trouble affording 50 dollar games, anything more would probably break me.

the problem with the first theory is that Microsoft will be making back losses for a long time before the PS3 comes out so they will be able to immediately institute a price cut without hurting them too much.

usually console makers don't start making a profit till around 4-5 years after a consoles release, thats what I read in one of the gaming mags anyway

they'll sell it for rediculous high prices, so hardcore gamers will buy it, they calculate how long it takes for us to save our money till we have the money and after the stupid kids bought a ps3 they make it 100 dollars cheaper

I tend to think that SONY will charge a bomb this time. They are legend for charging a lot for their 'pretty' devices often regardless of the competition. Classic example is the many media players they've released since the iPod that look average, cost much more and often have fewer features/capacity!
I'm a SONY fanboy since buying my PSP, so regardless of price, I'll be all over the PS3, and I'll have to pick up a SONY HDTV while I'm at it. I'm gonna be so broke

i wouldn't doubt it if sony brings the ps3 out for a price lower than what is imagined though the imagined range is 500+ so idk about that part *shrug*

I totally think that they are bluffing, I mean... I hope. But I am willing to fork out almost anything for a PS3. I'm even going to get a job over the summer so I can buy one... imagine that...

ive heard everything from 300-800, supposedly they are goign to cost sony 800 to make, but im pretty sure they will sell it at a loss since they will loose so many sales if its that high, i personally will wait until it drops to 300 to buy it

I think at this point we can safely say that the PS3 is going to be expensive. Plus with the situation that Sony is in now. (They stopped production of PS1, they are forced to stop production of PS2 along with having to pull all the PS2s off of shelves, they are getting a big law suit, a bunch of companies are pulling out of the UMD movie thing, Blue-Ray is expensive, the technolodgy powering the PS3 is expensive) The system will be a lot and the games won't be any cheaper. If people thought that the 360 was for rich people then that means the PS3 is for millionairs.

Same as most people would not be surprised if Sony actually does that, seeing as they have the money to make such schemes lol! Microosft though would lose profit to all those saying they wouldn't. If Sony does make the price very low after saying it will be high then everyone will go to Sony's PS3 and then if no one is playing XBOX 360 who is going to buy the games anymore???
As for Sony I think this: If ou have noticed Sony has been pinning PS2 prices very lower, lower and lower every two months or so. If they make enough profit from PS2 sales they would and could easily say oh hey heres the PS3 for $300 since we wil still make profit! it's a pretty good strategy if they are doing this cause selling low will get you more people meaning more profit!!! Sony does have to remeber that the rich people are only like 0.5% of the worlds population or a bit more!

This is very clever.
If we think ps3 will cost £500, then we will save £500 for launch. Then we find out it is only £300.
What do we do with the money, buy more games and accesorys for ps3!!!
Sony won't make any money out of ps3 but will with the games, meaning we get a cheap ps3 with loads og games and acssesorys.
That is if they are bluffing.

It has been confirmed 500usd for the 20 gig and 600usd for 60 gig and i believe this price high but worth it. the thing im worried about is the price of the games. 60 dollarsfor a game is ridiculous

Yeah, I was watching E3 on my friend's TV, and I saw that the PS3 will be 600 dollars......I dunno about the 20 gig or 60 gig or anything like that.....but TV is TV I guess....
