Sony Computer Entertainment this week previewed the turn-based PSP strategy offering Field Commander at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles.
Field Commander offers full 3D environments and units. While the game plays from a typical overhead view, the camera zooms in on the action whenever shots are fired.

The game includes air, land, and sea units and is set in modern times. It also includes online multiplayer for generals that run through the single player campaign and skirmishes.

Although the game is fully 3D, the game does not really benefit from this and the units become grainy and indistinguishable from each other. When the action does zoom in, the scale seems very off as infantry look like giants compared to tanks.

However, the strategic part of the game is solid as units seem to behave as any strategy gamer would expect and the action proceeds at a fast pace.

The game will drop to stores May 22, 2006.
