If UMDs were priced better they might actually gain some market share says a recent study of the PlayStation Portable device.
In a story from
Home media retailing, it seems "nearly two-thirds of PlayStation Portable owners own UMDs. More than two-fifths said the ability to watch movies or TV content on their PSPs was a very important factor in their decision to purchase the device" says a study from The NPD Group.
Titled "PSP Functionality and Content Study" the bottom line seems to be that "the high price of UMD movies is a significant impediment to buyers." The study also found that "games and downloaded music files are the most popular types of content used by the average PSP user."
The information in the report polled "55,000 members of NPD's consumer panel ages 6 to 44."
"Consumers want a premium product if they're going to pay a premium price," states David Riley, senior marketing manager for The NPD Group. "Portability isn't a strong enough justification for prices significantly higher than those of DVDs, especially when the price of portable DVD players have dropped so much over the past couple of years."
I don't really know how to explain but, these products, are simply entertainment and they don't have ROI (Return On Investment) and it doesn't last long either (especially movies, how many times would you watch in 1 specific period of time? as for games, how long does the fun factor last?). Secondly, we talk about the market or consumer coverage, it's... well... worldwide and from young to old, or should I say "public", which is covering the whole world. Do they need to charge that high? The material itself is or cost is only very very little. If they talk about the work and others, well, the consumer coverage is very high, so, in turn, they should look at the volume of sales. Do they prefer to get faster ROI instead and wouldn't want to take the risk.
Well, back to basic of business, you shouldn't force or blame the customer, you should know how to win your customer. Probably because there's no competition, they don't have to think of business strategy to win the customer, erm, "the right way". It's very obvious, all these while, it's always the price. And no point pin-pointing, finding fault, blaming, or any other un-necessary acts, the ROOT of the problem is very obvious, "price".
It's also very obvious what is the cause of, erm, "piracy", but one thing can be sure of, you can't really stop piracy, even if the product is very cheap, but you can REDUCE.
As for the UMD movies, it's no doubt not much people would buy due to many various reasons, mainly because you have many options and also the price for sure, also the fact that movies last the least compared to music and games...
No offence, just my 2 cents.
