| Hunting games are a rare species and are come out few and far between. The ones that are released can often be summarized by a four-letter word. Anyway, Cabelas Dangerous Hunts: Ultimate Challenge is quite a good hunting game and could be mistaken for a regular first person shooter. The story revolves around your hunting buddy “bulls eye Bill”, who is missing and presumed dead. As you try and find out what happened to him, you will uncover a slightly bigger plot and of course, shoot a whole lot of animals in different locations. Game modes are lacking, with no multiplayer, only story mode and quick play. Story mode consists of different missions around the world and is fairly varied, but a bit short. You’ll get to use handguns, rifles, 12 gauge and double barrel shotguns as well as a hunting bow to take care of any dangerous animals in your path. Missions range from getting from A to B and escorting companions to destinations. A boss battle usually ensues at the end of most missions. Controls are adequate and there are a couple of configurations available. Apart from the regular FPS controls, you can also slow down time for a period of time, which makes an easy game, even easier. In fact, you’ll never die from life depletion in the game, as the animals you hunt do ridiculously low damage to your health. Not only that, there’s also plenty of health packs around making for a very unbalanced game experience. Visually, the game looks quite good and has a smooth framerate but is lacking in detail. Sound and voice acting is adequate and helps keep you engaged in the story. For those wanting a bit more, it’s possible to unlock a few bonus levels but apart from that there are only the quick play mode levels to complete. Cabelas Dangerous Hunts: Ultimate Challenge makes a successful transition from console to handheld, but still has a few flaws which keep it from being a necessary purchase. If you’re looking for a decent FPS, than Cabelas Dangerous Hunts may be what you’re looking for. ![]() |
