HD-DVD or Blu-ray will be taking over from DVD its only a matter of time and with the progression HD tv's are making i dont think it will be too long.

in a way blue ray will win, because like it or not blue ray disks are going to be used in the ps3, and nothing is going to change that,
Even if the movie industry dosn't accept blue ray, the gameing industry will, so sony won't really lose that bad.

sony will release a blu-ray burner with MIGHTY encryption hard-coded into the drive so we can't rip dvd's anymore, that will be the lure for hollywood.
aside from the obvious 30GB-per-disk capacity... that's what i'm looking forward to, backing up several HDD's with less than 10 CD's!

Besides Hollywood and the gaming industry, Microsoft has a large desicsion in which one comes out on top! They make the software that is compatible with the Hardware used. So if DVD's were eradicated computers would need new drives and say windows media centre edition or widnows vista would need to be compatible with with one of them.

which is a problem
microsoft is the primary backer for hd-dvd, they've sunk a lot of money into toshiba for that format, and its obviously the weaker of the two, but microsoft is notriously stubborn when it comes to taking a loss. thats why we're all holding our breath.

Even if Blue-Ray did happen to become a big player, your current DVDs wouldn't be obsolete. Gotta remember that PS3 will be just like a PS2 and can play DVDs.

Looks like there's a step fowards for sony; read this article below. (dated 21st of april).
Panasonic today announced that the company will introduce a half-height internal Blu-ray Disc (BD) drive for desktop computers in Japan on June 10, 2006. The LF-MB121JD BD drive, which can read and write single-layer and dual-layer BDs, is also fully backwards compatible with DVD-ROM/DVD±R/DVD±RW/DVD-RAM as well as CD-ROM/CD-R/CD-RW. The drive will come bundled with a wide variety of software to help users easily backup and archive a large amount of data, edit video and audio and intuitively drag and drop data for DVD and CD burning. Panasonic also announced that it will make the half-height BD drive for desktop computers and slim-line slot and tray loading BD drives for notebook PCs available for OEM clients starting this month

hmm...i checked online a lil while ago and a blu-ray burner for the computer is upwards to 1,000 dollars.....last i checked they were 999$$$.....lol but the advantage of blu-ray is if you have a crap-load of dvds, you can store about 10-20 movies depending how you put them on a blu-ray disc.....hell if people can make ff7ac burnable to a cd-r, then thats ....a little bit over 77 movies!!!! think of the possibilities blu ray could be......cost for games only rose 10$,which is still a lot, but its well worth it for the good graffix it displays......i looked it up...and blu-ray discs run anywhere from 2-8 dollars a disc from where i heard it....ouch..is 77 movies really worth it? that should be the question....i think HD-DVD will be a hit before blu-ray....45 gigs is still good considering its cheaper than a 2-8$ 54gb blu-ray....

in terms of movies dvd on a hd tv or playing on the comp at high res, the quality really sucks. blue ray should improve upon that with the extra space

They also say that to make a game that will be able to push the playstation 3 to the max the'll have to hire more people,so that mean's the more money they spend to make the game more money we spend to get the game. 50 to 60 go's to 70 and 80 for a game.On a console that cost 600 to start with so as they say you have to pay if you wan't to play!
So it look's like dvd's might just hang around a little while longer...

Blu-Ray (or HD-DVD) will eventually take over from DVDs, the rate of this will depend on how quickly people buy HD-TVs and how much HD content becomes available. Here in the UK, Sky Digital (the main pay satellite provider are only just introducing their first HD channels - a few movie channels and a few sports channels).
So I think that, at least in the UK, DVDs have a few years to go yet.

but there has to be other ways to get around it huh? i mean not many people are gonna pay 80 bucks for a game 600 for a ps3 and 1000 plus for a hd-tv. i think that the blue-ray is actually gonna real good once people see what it can do and how it looks people are gonna notice it more and it will blow regular dvds out the water jus like dvds did vhs and so forth down the line. looks like we gotta get better jobs people.

They have plenty of movie companies backing blue-ray.

They can get better. Blue-Ray movies on 1080p tv look than on dvds. No a movie wont fill up the space on a blue ray disc, but it means more content, better picture quality. Plus it has a lot to do with gaming which takes up way more space than movies do.

"On May 22nd the limits of the dual-layer Blu-ray disc will be maxed out. That is the day when Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest and Pirates of the Caribbean - Curse of the Black Pearl will both be released by Disney Pictures. Both movies will take up 75gb of space. This will mean a 2 disc set, a dual-layer disc will be maxed out at 50gb capacity and the other a single layer containing 25gb. This is due to full 1080p video and uncompressed PCM 5.1 surround"
Go BLu-Ray!

I think they have just a little bit of support
"So what's the breakdown of forces on each side? On the Blu-Ray side is a large group of CE manufacturers, including Dell, Hewlett Packard, Hitachi, LG Electronics, Mitsubishi Electric, Panasonic (Matsushita Electric), Pioneer, Royal Philips Electronics, Samsung Electronics, Sharp, Sony, TDK and Thomson. Some content providers also are onboard. In addition to obvious backing from Sony-affiliated movie studios Sony Pictures Entertainment and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the Walt Disney Company and its home-video division Buena Vista Entertainment offered its non-exclusive endorsement of Blu-Ray in December. In addition, video gaming powerhouse Electronic Arts, along with Vivendi Universal Games, both came out for Blu-Ray at the 2005 International CES in January."
Also,
TO ease the original poster of the thread - SonyPS3 will soon suuport upconverting of DVDs. However, It's not yet known if this will be done via firmware, or some hardware/chip in a new PS3. Lets hope a simple firmware can do it.

Actually almost all of the movies companies are backing blue-ray minus a few. And yes, some of the ones backing blue-ray also support hd-dvd, so dont get me wrong.
And blue-ray size will not be maxed out yet. Theyre working on a 200gb disc and 50gb is only current. So, dont tell me that itll be maxed out. Maybe at this one point right now but not forever. The technology is still new and will grow over time.

My opinion is this:
Blue Ray will take over eventually. The sooner the better, just like beta and vhs. I don't know whether this will help either side but...
Can't remember which company, but a company is coming out with a Disc that has both formats. One side BR and the other HD DVD. Wonder what kind of impact this will have. Will people expect all movies to come in a dual formatted disc so whichever player they have will work? I think BR will still win out
HDTV's will be prevalent in a couple of years(when digital TV will be required) so it is less of if, it's when.
It's true, BR do cost more to produce since it takes a new type of production. Whereas, HD DVD it only requires retooling of current DVD technology. But like all technology the price for both formats will come down as penetration increases.
