Think about it... UMD blue ray disc... I think they could store about as much as DVDs can today... Sure they would have to make a new PSP, like it might end up being the PSP2 or something... but then they could add a cell processor... all the possibilities...

At the rate of technology advancement it would be WAY shorter than that.

I agree - who would have thought 5 years ago that you could play Mario64 on a handheld??? And thats an underpowered one too!
god1
Yeah who would have thought that we would be able to play nintendo, gb games on a psp who tell who would have thought that i would luv to know.
NDBULLY
could happen at the earllyest in 3 years

To put Blue-Ray on PSP would be ridiculus. They would just be able to add more content or make the games longer, which many games don't even take advantage with on the UMDs. Plus, I have seen PSP games for fifty bucks. You know, the full price of a console game. I wouldn't be willing to pay like seventy buks for a Blue-Ray PSP game. /:

K the idea of Blu-Ray on PSP um I would have to say no. For one PSP game sale would skyrocket even more!!! I do not want to buy another PSP until after maybe 5 years lol! As for a handheld with the power of a 360, I am guessing about 6 to 8 years. they say something new in every field of technology si discovered every six months, and that was form last year. Who knows I bet now it is like every 2 months lol! Technology advances very quickly and within years we coudl have virtual games in our own living rooms!

Biggest problem any handheld of the future is going to have is not the processor or capability of the graphics....it's battery length. PSP battery only lasts 5 hours at present.

You probably could already get the power of an xbox360 in a small container, but battery lifetime would be about 5 seconds.

Laptops have been around years and still their biggest problem is getting it to last longer than around 2 hours of high intensity work (ie movie/game playing)

Until there is a battery capable of storing huge amounts of energy in a tiny space that sort of handheld will be impossible.
Snake a
they would off sorted the batery problem out by then and blue ray umd are posible but will probably be realesed with psp 2.
Roguemeister
You are hoping a bit snake.

Remember the atari Lynx and the game gear. Seminal handhelds of their time and their battery life was that of a couple of hours tops.

They are better at the moment, but a new power storage system is needed to power these juice monsters over the next few years.

The problem is down to size, you need a specific storage space to hold the relevant materials, the bigger the capacity the bigger the vessel needed.

Personally I think the next handheld should steer away from any format of disk and go back to a cartridge/stick format, quicker loading times, less parts to faff with (lasers!) and less susceptible to dirt and damage.
Snake a
just to say I wasn't interested in games until ps1.
And Sony will surly come up with somthing for the batery, it is hurting there psp too much.
Roguemeister
Funny thing is, I'm expecting a 3rd party company to come up with something first.

Look at memory cards, for the PS2 you can only get an official 8meg card, but look online you can get a 64meg card...Why haven't Sony released a bigger mem card?

The first big mem sticks for psp were not sony either...

Seems like the makers aren't that bothered at improving things! Or are quite a bit behind.

My first console was a binatone (early 80's console which had tennis/squase and the first gun attachment.) Then had an Amstrad CPC464, Megadrive, PC, PS1, PS2, PSP... scary for me I've been in some form of gaming/computing for about 23 yrs!
Snake a
your probably right, a 3rd party would make a better batery first.

(do you need 64mb for ps2, I have barly used my 8 mb and had my ps2 since launch)
Roguemeister
I do need more than 8mb...not used up 64 yet though.

Several of the games I have take up over 1mb in save space each, and that adds up quickly.

I will be using the extra to play with these apps that you can get running via your mem stick under swap magic...
ECKOgear
that would be hot, but you see the trouble they havein with a normal size cd...just imagine a UMD size
ghostsnyper
yea....
1.blue ray on psp would be cool yes
2. pirces for psp would be a b!tch....look at the ps3
3. a psp redesign would be bullsh!t because us homebrewers would be screwed....
4. sony would get a lot of complaints that psp cant play this and they wouldnt buy the new 1.....blah blah...sales would go down.....
5. if they add a cell proccesor, they would have to increase the battery size and output...not to mention youd have less play time than we already do
5. if there were to be blu-ray for psp, it could only work having the codec flashed to psp for use....
6 its a good idea but it wont happen soon....

whew covered it all
stevojanago
psp 3.0
