Optimus Prime

Genre: Platformer
Number of Players: 1

Tecmo’s first effort on the PSP is an above average platformer. Unfortunately lackluster controls and frustrating gameplay keeps the game from being an enjoyable experience.

Tokobot puts you in control of a boy named Bolt. He has found robots called Tokobots, which follow him around and help him out by providing him with various abilities. The Tokobot’s can be used in three different formations for different usages such as climbing, swinging on poles as well as attacking enemies. The concept is quite good and provides a bit more depth to the game. There are also Karakuri combinations which make your Tokobot’s combine and transform into a machine which you can use. These transformations use up items collected in the levels and are used to solve certain puzzles as well as to attack enemies.

Tokobot is a difficult game and not recommended for kids. The game is unbalanced with some areas being easy and others very difficult. Some of the bosses and jumping puzzles can be very challenging and will require you to replay them over and over. This can be frustrating especially when a lot of the blame can be laid on the controls. On the pole swinging areas and jumping puzzles, the controls are unresponsive. Bolt does not control as well as he should resulting in many annoying deaths and frustrating gameplay. Tokobot also suffers from annoying camera angles.

Graphics in the game are good but nothing special. There are nicer looking PSP games (Kao Challengers) but the game runs smoothly. Sound is sparse with the story being told with text instead of voice actors and the game has average sound effects and music. There is no multiplayer or any other reason to play the game if you decide to persevere and finish it.

Platform junkies will enjoy Tokobot if they are willing to put up with its faults. For the rest it may not be a very enjoyable experience. Tokobot isn’t a bad game but it has some game design issues which bring down the whole experience. However, if you’re looking for a great platformer for the PSP I recommend you purchase Kao Challengers instead, which is a much more enjoyable platformer.
