Recently, video game sales stats in Japan have been released that show unlike the week before, the Nintendo DS was able to out sell the Sony PSP. Nintendo may struggle in the competitive market in North American, but in Japan, Nintendo is still the king of the land.
Media Create, a leading analyst firm in Japan, shows that in the week of January 16th-22nd, Nintendo held nine out of the top ten spots in software sales. Among these popular games in Japan are Animal Crossing 2, Super Mario Strikers, Brain Training and Brain Training 2, Mario Kart DS, and Monster Hunter portable, amongst others. Also, in the same time period, the Nintendo DS was #1 amongst system sales with 64,515, which was 26,244 more than the Sony PSP
Comparatively, the Xbox 360 continues to struggle in Japan. The week before, Microsoft sold 6,107 consoles, while this week, only 3,616 were sold.
It will be interesting to compare this date once the Sony PS3 and the Nintendo Revolution are released. Most likely, the now popular handhelds will have to make way for the hugely anticipated consoles. The question remains though; who will win the console war in Japan?
When Nintendo released market share data for the handheld video game industry it revealed that Game Boy Advance holds 41% of the market, the Nintendo DS at 31% and the PSP at a close 28% though it released just four months after the DS launch in North America and has been overshadowed by a DS sales surge thanks to the large list of well liked first-party games.
however, for the time being, these statistics show that Nintendo is still holding strong in the video gaming market in Japan due in part to great games and Wi-Fi connection

thats so stupid, ds is crappy and theres no good games for it. THe only people who got it were 10 year olds
rev99
true dat..

the ds sucks in comparison. no question.
justin.mah
I wonder if the DS sales will slow down closer to the launch date of the DS Lite...
momento
maybe it's because the DS is cheaper adn more pertain to the younger audience.
akura2
in mutli-child households...it's easier fir parents to buy three DS's than PSPs... also the games are geared to those kids
pck
like akura2 said its cheaper for parents to buy psps, i also had a ds but got rid off it as the games were 2 babyish
Skelitor007
what ever they only like it better because 40 year old men can play pokemon.
Elemental
yea, ds's games are more what the jap. kids like... cartoon fun. while american kids like more adrenaline pumping, heart beating, button jamming, seizure giving kinda games.
Ollydv
Geeze, theres actually people still saying the DS sucks?

You obviously have no good taste as the DS has WAY more games than the PSP.

I have both and still don't think the DS sucks. Most of the people that says it sucks have NEVER even played a DS, so it's an invalid statement.
MooSieFate
i've played it, that touchscreen was a terrible idea, my friends is all fu(ked up with scratches from that stylus. the scanlines are what really turns me off though... it's just not on the same level as psp, better hardware all around.
Elemental
the reason ds has more games is cause its been out longer, the psp still needs more time to get its stuff out
Mercuri
The PSP is better hardware but you're paying for it. The DS is a very solid system. Dual screens, wireless, touchpad, backwards compatability with GBAdvance games. When used right, the stylus doesn't scratch the screen. Kirby is an awesome, awesome game and makes the best use of the touchscreen ever. It's a kind of gameplay that you can't get anywhere else. There's more games for the Gameboy as well and are less expensive than PSP games.

Granted, the PSP has a superior screen and more processing power but you could buy 2 DSes for 1 PSP.

Sidenote: I'm going to guess that most of the people saying that the Nintendo DS is for kids are kids themselves wink.gif
btwright
You can debate it all day, but both have good games that appeal to different people. The fact is that they're both so good that the top seller shifts every couple weeks.
In my opinion the PSP is better, but that's because i find having to switch which screen I'm looking at on the DS frustrating.
Mercuri
Exactly. Both have their merits, but there was so much DS bashing (I guess because these are PSP forums) that I wanted to counterpoint wink.gif
blahblahblah122
DS actually is dominating the Japan charts except for the last couple of weeks because of the sellout, but the reason there aren't as many PSP sales is because it's too expensive. Also, don't bash the DS. It's a good system with original games you can't find anywhere else and a better variety of games. PSP does have its merits, but it does kind of poorly in the games department because of all the firmware updates associated with the UMD's, the prices, and it has a lack of a good library mainly because of all its multimedia features. I like the PSP and the DS the same and they are both good systems.

The DS is popping out great games, it had a slowish start but now it is rocking, and with the redesign coming out in March it seems to be a very bright (lite laugh.gif ) future for the DS

PSP is doing good also but as a games device it fails at the moment and not many people want to cash out another amount of money on umd movies that they have on DVD already, or spend money on memory sticks to put mp3's on them while ipod is smaller and capable to hold much MUCH more music, not to mention that most newer cell phones are decent mp3 players also.

Everyone thinks you're an idiot, who just says the DS sucks because you think it will make you cool on a PSP forum.
leckie
Ok i own both a DS and a PSP so i have a non bias opinion and i have to say that i find the PSP to be better, however it was clear to me that the DS is far better built with no hardware issues whatsoever where as my psp and stuck pixels etc. Also the touch screen on the DS is a nice addition i still feel that the large screen and graphics make for a better play but thats just our culture where we are driving for better graphics and more power where as the japanese are willing to put up with less graphics for something thats more appealing to them and that is interactive games. Different cultures different needs.

Why can't everyone like both the PSP and the DS?

Surely you can't be that desperate to defend your purchase!

The competition is good and healthy, and I enjoy seeing what innovations each company can come up with to keep the other on their toes.
schneider
Thats stupid PSP is so much better than Ds because i have Ds and PsP and i dont even touch my DS
Fl1pnotic
thats ok if it did because psp has alraedy saturated the market. If every single person in japan owns a psp already then how do u expect it to sell more. Well thats just my biasness talking but azn ppl just like more inavative games and that is what the ds give. *me being an azn i can say this* but i however see the potential of the psp and the overall dominance it already has over the ds
disaznbabeluvsu
i think that the psp is so much better i played that ds is not that good. but i understand that the ds is more popular over there but whatever
