I know what happened: User Error
In all seriousness, it could've been any number of things. Faulty house wiring, defective unit, who knows. You simply haven't given us enough information to draw a solid conclusion.

I think its highly probable that faulty wiring caused it. Still more info would help. Also I got a question for you did you have to pay for the damages because you plugged it in?

Me too! I heard of them overheating and stuff.. But never blowing up.
I sujest to leckie that if u want an exploding Xbox, attach some dynamite to it and blow it up yourself... bit of a waste though!

Doubt Overheating Caused this
If it Did it May have been on for around 12 hours or more
I Played Oblivion on my 360, With it Standing Upright and it was left on for around 10-11 hours ( I Wasnt playing the whole time )
Most Likely To be a Faulty Unit

it is proly the wiring if you were in the basement that means it could be wet or moist and the wires could had been eroded. and the high power that the xbox drains from the house could had been too much for the old wires and they could had shorted and messed up .
