Is is possible to copy the contents of a UMD to one's computer? I'm wondering if it's possible to distribute content that way. For example, if I buy a UMD with episodes on it, is it possible to copy those episodes (in mp4 format) to my computer. I'm guessing you'd have to dump it to the mem stick first and copy it from there.
drozek
sure why not i don't see a prob with that
willthethrill
Has any 1 done this? I don't have any movie UMDs (none that are available interest me) or I'd experiment.
drozek
why not just rent one.
willthethrill
I live in a country that doesn't currently offer UMD rentals.

i have a umd movie, what do i do
willthethrill
Acquire a UMD dumper and try dumping the contents of ur movie. Tell me wut happens; specifically, the format of the data. Also, tell me wut dumper u used & where u got it.
Since I'm interested in distribution, I'm really interested in compilation UMDs (episodes), but there aren't many of those on the market at present. It's unlikely that I'd distribute an entire movie (too big).
Shihiko
The UMD Alpha Dumper works just fine. I'm not sure what you're exactly trying to do, but once the contents are dumped you can't really play them on the computer. Which also leads to you are unable to produce MP4 versions to distribute. Your best bet is to follow the DVD to MP4 guides that are posted around.

[Note: Dumping of a Movie UMD usually leads to not enough space as they most likely require 1.8GB of space to dump into.]

First, you'll need a 2Gb MS. Then you'll need to dump the data, and then you'll need to decode the non-standard video codec the movies are encoded in. You've got a job on your hands.

Thanks for ur responses.

2 GB MS? The PSP only accepts 1 GB cards. Do these dumpers (hehe i said dumpers) run from the PSP or a computer? Sorry if i sound like a noob but i've never done this sort of thing b4. I'm not into homebrew. Although, I'm not upgrading my ver 1.0 firmware in case I decide to get into homebrew in the future.

Shihiko: I thought it was obvious from my last post wut i'm trying to do: distribution. For example, if I buy a Seinfeld UMD in the future I might like to share the episodes with others. So, I'd need to extract the episodes from the UMD first. Thanks for ur responses
Shihiko
Well what I mean is, currently there is no way to play ISO versions of the UMD Videos, nor is there a way to play them/reencode to MP4 for the PSP to play.

But if you're planning to release/distribute the ISO of the UMDs that's alright. Maybe later on there will be a player for them. For now you're best bet is to use a convertor that converts non-UMD movies to the PSP MP4 formats. wink.gif

[Note: There is 2GB Memorysticks, but I don't know where you heard about the PSP only supporting 1GB Memorysticks.]
willthethrill
Thanks Shihiko. Presently, it seems like more trouble than it's worth.

The PSP can accept > 1.0 GB cards? Really? Shit, this is news to me. A friend of mine told me the PSP was designed to only accept 1.0 GB cards in order to prevent game copying.
(I'm sure I sound like a real noob right now.)
Shihiko
No problem.

There was another rumor about where 2GB sticks are halting in production. Not sure, I will have to get this confirmed, though it does seem true that the Sony websites in Japan have no stock left for the Highspeed series of Memorysticks. [Which includes the 2GB.]

I talked to a PSP retailer yesterday & he said that the PSP can take 2.0 GB cards. They're not readily available, nor are they cheap where I live. I buy Sandisk cards as they are cheaper than the Sony cards; I have a 1.0 GB and a 512 MB.
I'm thinking of selling my 512 MB and upgrading to another 1.0 GB. Or maybe I should just buy another 1.0 GB and keep the 512 MB.
Shihiko
Everywhere I go I hear people talking about how many 1GB's and 512Mb's they have. Makes me feel poor with just a 512Mb laugh.gif

I'm saving up for a 2GB if they are still avaliable.
willthethrill
512 MB is enuf. You can fit an entire movie or several episodes on a 512 card. I just transfer content over to my 1 GB card, watch it and then delete it to make room for new stuff. My content is all backed up on my computer. I actually have have trouble filling up my 1.0 GB card. I'm presently not interested in 2 GB cards. Too expensive & I don't need that much capacity. Also, if you lose or fry your 2 GB card that's quite a hit. I'd literally cry. But if you have two 1 GB cards and you lose/fry one, you still have 1 card left. I'm always on the hunt for content. If you know any sources, pls enlighten me.

I wonder if you've had the same prob I've had: sometimes when I delete videos on my PSP it crashes. Have you ever had that happen? It makes me suspicious of the quality of my cards. It's definitely a mem card issue. Maybe I should stay away from SanDisk cards?
Shihiko
Sony Memorystick here, have had no problems ever.

If you have a 2.0 PSP P-TV is good for movies, well that's if you understand the language the movie is in wink.gif

Tried extracting the Spiderman 2 & Sampler umd's. Both were a total of 1.6gb each, but since i only have a 512 card, had to split them into 400mb seperate files, no idea how to combine them back together, lol. i really should spend the $180 on a 2 gig card...
wu3ooo
if you live in the states, frys electronics sells 1 gig memory sticks at 95$ and 2 gig sticks at 300$. that 1 gig is the cheapest i can find one with the acception of ebay. and the psp does support the 2 gig. there just way expensive right now
Bezerker
well right now you can pre-order a 2 gig for $180 if you look it up on froogle. Or you could spend $25 on a ms pro adapter, and $279 on a 4 gig MS pro stick, and have 4 gigs for only $304. Im still gonna wait a few months, im crossing my fingers for Xecuter's harddrive. Plus the prices of MS sticks go down extremely fast.

Wow that would be pretty cool to get some of my movies onto my computer, but it seems like too much trouble to go through.
chimpcomix
well fuck dude, in niagara falls new york, the target store has them for 119 bux for the 2 gig blue card.
