I came across this from another forum, if true which I see no reason for it not to be then I no longer feel so strange buying all the umd flicks that I could even ones that I have on dvd format already. Also that would explain why there are so many umd movies coming out soon.
"UMD movie sales have been extremely strong in America, where 4.3 million copies have already shipped. This figure includes the 1 million Spider-Man 2 UMDs that came bundled with the first release of the handheld. On the other hand, sales of UMD movies have been sluggish in Japan, with only 400,000 copies being sold up to date. But given the overall good sales of PSP software, Sony will be increasing its production capacity in Japan from 3 million UMDs a month to 5 million."

3.3 million sales in US, not bad i guess. I cant really imagine that much but like, i probably wont be actually buying any umd movies other than advent children, which i might just get on DVD instead.
UMDs wont really take off THAT greatly in the entertainment industry until you can buy a Movie/Music-UMD player, which probably wont be the best resolution & sound quality anyway. Maybe they'll make dual-layered umds and require firmware updates so the psp can read them, heck knows, we'll see.

UMD movies are already dual layered. Single layered UMDS hold 900 something MB while the dual layered hold 1.8gb.
Also the UMD movies are expensive in Asia which is probably why its selling like badly.

They also have all the xxx rated UMD's in Asia/Japan. I think it would be a great idea though, if they started to bundle the UMD movie with the DVD movie. This wouldn't only get people to buy them, but would probably give them a bit of a push to pick up a psp.

I hear now that this figure DOES NOT include that UMD, making the figures even more impressive. Many sources seem to state this, so I can't be certain.

You cant carry a lot of them around though... you're limited to your 1gb and you wont fit much at a high quality on it.
and y'know... the US IS bigger than Japan

They're are a ridiculous price. All the UMD movies on Lik-Sang (Japan) are US$40. I can't imagine why anyone would buy them at that price. They're about half the price here which is a lot more reasonable, but considering you're getting a very small picture and only 2-channel sound, along with questionable authoring (From what I've seen in reviews) - not a great deal.
Fine, they're portable, that's really the only advantage.
Ya could always encode movies to AVC (better quality:size ration) and leave them on your PC and copy the ones you want to watch on a trip onto the memorystick. Lot cheaper than a UMD and quality is perfectly watchable for a 2-hour movie at around 400-500Meg.
Half the cost of the things is probably due to the licensing costs from the studios, and the less you sell of a thing the higher the price needs to be. Catch-22.
The BS region/zone system doesn't help the situation much either.

Yeah... oh well... i guess we'll be seeing major changes within the next year or so but then again, Sony has loved delaying everything PSP-Related
