So, you just got a shiny new PSP for Christmas? Want to know what you can do with it?

Here's just a bit of the exciting world of PSP homebrew:
1) You can take games off of the UMD discs and put them on a PSP Memory Stick to save your batter and make them run faster!
2) You can play one of many homebrew games.
3) You can play your movies on it. Without buying discs.
4) You can use a variety of useful applications on your PSP!

First off, what's homebrew?

Homebrew's software that people who are not sanctioned or licensed by Sony have created for the PSP system.

How do I run it?

To run all homebrew you'll need a PSP 1.50. Here's how to get there.
Pay a visit to PSP System Information ( From the PSP interface go all the way to the left "Settings" then to "System Settings," then "System Information." )

If you have a PSP version anything under 3.03, you're in luck. Read Here.

If not all you can do is what Sony lets you do, which is play movies/music/photos, surf the internet, and play games off of discs that you've purchased.

Once you've got a 1.50, here is a good place to go.

is it easy to downgrade your psp (very new to all this)
ns9
it is easy. google it or search the forums.
johny 5
its very easy to downgrade from 2.00->1.5
firts u have to download the "mph downgrader" (which i think that u can find at this website or search it on google)
second u need to download the firmware 1.5 upgrade (u probably can also find it on this website or you can google it)
then all u need to do is follow the directions on MPH downgrader and your good to go with your firmware 1.5

You can also use fanjita's eboot loader which alows u to run homebrew games on your psp firmware 2.00 (only) which works using a tiff overflow.
even though it can't play kernal-mode applications (games that can use usb or wifi, though the new eboot loader can run some wifi applications) (which also means that you can't rip games or play-back iso image games) it works good with most emulators and other homebrew
ranxoren
but is there like a "restriction" to creating an ISO launcher for Eboot Loader for v2.0 ??
plevillain
Yes there is a restriction: you can not do it period.
ns9
It is not possible, at the moment, to run iso's on any firmware over 1.5.

Here is my problem:
I HAD a 1.5 system, however I let an @$$hole borrow it, and now it is a 2.6 system.
I have GTA and the eboot loader to use homebrew, but I just need to know if there is any way to setup a ISO loader for it or to play movies off the MS now. Any help would be great for me. Thanks.
ns9
Its always been possible to play videos on any firmware and you cannot run iso's on version 2.00 or higher.
DraySol
Grrrr....thanks for the info tongue.gif

You will gain something...
Playing homebrews with it, running iso instead of umd
At the worst of all, you still can add a piece of black brick in your room....
BlueJay
TA-082 The numbers in the inside tof the umd tell if you have one or not right? I dont see them so does that mean I dont have one?

THanks for any help

well assuming you are checking in the right spot you should see ic1003 if its not their you do not have a ta-082/086

A few things about custom firmware.

After updating to CFW, make sure to format your card. If you're running any OE CFW, it will make the base folders for you.

ISOs
All ISO/CSO game images should go to this path: MS:\ISO. Make sure that you have NO UMD mode disabled, and have a UMD in the drive. Yes, I know that using a UMD uses up more battery life, but not all games are NO UMD compatible and this just makes playing games easier. To make it easy on yourself, put your favorite UMD or most useful UMD in the drive. IE: Lumines, or GTA: LCS.

PSX EBOOTS
Place your EBOOT.PBP in a folder with the game name on it. If you're running 3.03 OE-B you will need the KEYS.BIN file, and you should really upgrade. The newer versions of OE CFW are great. Now for example, if you're playing FFVII you would put the disc 1 EBOOT.PBP in this path: MS:\PSP\GAME\FFVII\EBOOT.PBP. In cases of multi disc games you need to make sure the game ID on all of your discs are the same. You can use a POPSconverter to check and change these IDs. If this doesn't work, you may have a bad image.

HOMEBREW
Installing homebrew takes a little more attention. If you're running the 1.50 kernal you will put your homebrew in MS:\PSP\GAME, and if you're running 3.XX kernal you put it in MS:\PSP\GAME150.

In all cases go back to your XMB. Now go to GAME, then MS, and your title should be right there. If you're seeing corrupted data from ISO, or EBOOT.PBP you have the file in the wrong place or you have a bad image. Try again. In the case of homebrew, you may have a corrupted data icon for the second folder of eumlators, and other homebrew programs. You can hide most of these by turning on HIDE CORRUPTED ICONS in your recovery menu.

Custom icon sets for your XMB are always fun. You can find, or make your own topmenu_plugin.rco files. There are literally tons out there.

The orignial wave patterns can be replaced with a custom system_plugin_bg.rco, and put it in flash0:/vsh/resource/system_plugin_bg.rco

The original battery meter can be replaced with a custom system_plugin_fg.rco, and put it in flash0:/vsh/resource/system_plugin_fg.rco

The original coldboot can be replaced with a custom opening_plugin.rco, and put it in flash0:/vsh/resource/opening_plugin.rco

The original font can be replaced with a custom ltn0.pgf, and put it in flash0:/font/ltn0.pgf

The original game loading icon can be replaced with a custom game_plugin.rco, and put in flash0:/vsh/resource/game_plugin.rco

The original photo loading icon can be replaced with a custom photo_plugin.rco, and put in flash0:/vsh/resource/photo_plugin.rco

The original gameboot can be replaced with a custom gameboot.pmf, and put in flash0:/vsh/resource/gameboot.pmf

Sounds can be replaced with a custom system_plugin.rco, and put in flash0:/vsh/resource/system_plugin.rco

Finally, the volume bar can be replaced with a custom impose_plugin.rco, and put in flash0:/vsh/resource/impose_plugin.rco

Aside from that, you can find instructions on how to change your "About PSP" screen, you can find the plugin for having Cintros, and there are a lot of other plugins that you can find as well. Things like updating the Network Update function to reboot and turn off your PSP, cheat devices, and much more.
