PlayStation 3 owners, heads up! We've just gotten word about a work-in-progress project that will, in theory, downgrade your Sony PS3's firmware. You'll be needing a PS3 that sports an Infectus modchip to make the downgrader work though.

We've been getting a lot of news regarding different dev teams' progresses in cracking the PlayStation 3 code, and well, they all look promising. We've seen the decrypting of the EBOOT.BIN of game discs, the modded USB PS3, and the alpha build of the Backup Launcher, among others. Now, we've got something to flash Sony's console and downgrade it when the need arises. We'll quote NDT (the one who posted about the said hack) on the project's use:

Using this tool you can modify a NAND backup in order to let the console think it has a lower Firmware version, so later you can use an official Sony upgrade PUP file to "downgrade" to the version you need.

It has been tested to patch all PS3 Firmware dumps up to 2.10 so far, but is a work-in-progress as we still need to test re-updating more thoroughly.

According to NDT, they will not be releasing the downgrader unless an exploit that needs a different firmware comes along. Interesting, eh? We'll keep you posted on more updates regarding this so stay tuned.

can this really be it.......

xD hacked? All they've done is admit they've found a DOWNGRADER, without and exploit in a previous FW it's WORTHLESS. You need said exploits to run unsigned code plain and simple, so they may have found a downgrader but without an exploit it's useless. As well we don't allow links to QJ, secondly this does nothing for retail PS3 owners you'd need a mod chip ect.

Even if this was worth it, does a PS3 really need to be modded? I don't think i'll ever mod my PS3 when I get it.

I completely agree, the PS3 doesn't need mods the only people who want this are cheap arseholes who want an ISO loader, I can say this because Yellow Dog Linux allows homebrew thus no hacks needed.
Jinzo2
yea sorry gantz but i couldnt help but post this, i also agree that i would never mod my PS3, way to expensive to go through the risk and with a great line up of games for this year theres no chance XD. didnt you say gantz that the ps3 can only write 4GB of memory at a time? so wouldnt that mean that if the ps3 is ever hacked you'll never be able to put a game in it?

Yeah the way the system write works won't allow more than 4GB at a time. That's for each file btw max can only be 4GB what I mean is like if you have X number of files each one is under 4GB but the overall is over 4GB it'll allow you to write the data i.e my Death Note collection overall all it's 9GB+ but I still wrote it to the PS3 all at once.

Plus, I heard you can put Linux on your PS3 to make it into a computer.

Maybe not but considering Linux is an OS one would assume it turns the PS3 in a PC esque beast.

funny, but seriously guys, the day the PS3 is hacked and an ISO loader comes up is the death of PS3:( i think the reason microsoft charges for pretty much everything might be the fact that the 360 is hacked and developers are losing a lot of money. but like i said before, IF that ever does happen, i would never consider modding my PS3
DeMoNiC
Same. My PS3 (when I get it) will remain unmodded no matter what.

Man, the only things my PS3 will be used as is a game system, a media center, and I might put Linux on it to make it into a computer.

long as its not used for an ISO loader its all good

i'd much rather have the ability to load PC games on the PS3 than an ISO Loader. It's way to cheap not to buy a PS3 game i mean i admit to not buying PSP games but the last time I used my PSP was 6 months ago on vacation.

about the psp part, me and you are the same i havent even touched my psp for a long time, last time i grabbed it was to watch a movie

Even with the 360 being hacked the developers arent losing that much on the games. Theres not that many people who pirate games for it. The psp/ds are much more rampant and available. Downloading huge games to pirate is just not mainstream.

when you put it that way then yea but when you're desperate you'll be surprised what people can and will do

Okay this topic has served it's purpose it's informed us of everything we need to know in the current standing of the PS3 scene as well Jinzo, Nyght is right, 93% of the people who pirate games are from 3rd world countries where games are outrageously priced, or people who simple cannot afford them and for this I understand it's easy to afford a system but games at $60 a pop is harder to do if you don't come from a privileged family or work a job providing for someone other than yourself. [OFF-TOPIC] If you don't start showing up at my site Jinzo and more actively participating you will be demoted, seriously even with school there's no way you don't have at least an hour a week to actively contribute to my site.
