Full Version: Best Buy discontinuing 80GB PS3

An anonymous Best Buy employee has sent us a scan of an internal letter, which notifies employees that the 80GB system is being discontinued. "The 80GB version of the PS3 is going closeout and won't be replaced at this time," it reads. "It will come off the planogram on Jan. 28. The 60GB version should already be gone from stores. Only the 40GB version of PS3 will be sold in Best Buy stores at this time."

The 40GB model currently costs $399, and is the cheapest PS3 available. However, it does have a few limitations: it lacks memory card readers, features only two USB ports, and most importantly, loses backwards compatability, as noted in the memo. "This means that there currently isn't a version that is PS2 compatible," it notes.

There have been very shady rumors suggesting Sony is planning on introducing a cheaper $299 version of its console (although that has been repeatedly denied by Sony). Earlier in the week, we also discovered an FCC filing for a white model PS3. Whatever's going on, it appears that Sony's making moves for a big change. Stay tuned.

sad.gif this kind of scares me, well at least i already got my 60GB smile.gif hopfully Sony wont do something stupid cause i think they should at least of kept the 60GB for in case someone wants the 'whole" package of the PS3 instead of the 40GB PS3, as for the white PS3 coming out...i know that will sell without a doubt

Your best bet is to just buy the 40GB and put a bigger HD in it your self. Just google it!

but why do that when you can pay an extra $100 and get 40GB more space, more USB ports, the media card reader, chrome finish (i think thats what its called), and most importantly..PS2 capability, sure for probably $50 you can get WAY more extra space but you dont get all those other nice features i mentioned smile.gif

Uhm Jinzo you still get the chrome trim on the 40GB model, only the 20GB didn't have it.

That 40gb picture is a render not an actual picture. My brother has a 40gb and I have a 60gb. No difference in trim. On top of that Motorstorm doesnt suck and has sold very well actually. Maybe you dont like it but thats not the general opinion.

motorstrom indeed does not suck, i think it would just be easier to pay the extra for a 60GB or 80GB, you get more stuff with it

I'm sure they'll come out with a new Motorstorm 2 bundle.

They did it with MGS4.

most likely the only good ps3 after the 60 and 80 will be the silver mgs edition
lack of backwards compatibility, IMO is a huge mistake and not worth it
