As we approach the end of January 2008 there is one game that we at Avid Gamer have been dying to get our hands on. Back in 2005 (2006 for Xbox360) Burnout Revenge took everything which was great about the previous titles and made it superb. Fast forward two years and the expectation is at boiling point. A fantastic demo last month showed off the fluid online play, the drive anywhere mechanics and the jaw dropping graphics. As a result, with only a week and two days until release we present our top seven reasons to why you should buy Burnout Paradise.

Number 7. Burnout Paradise is the only worthwhile title to be released this January. This doesn’t mean that it’s the only title coming this month but unless you’re a distinct fan of January’s releases then this is the only worthwhile one. It’s a great marketing ploy by Criterion as the holiday rush has subsided and people are starting to complete their Christmas titles. Either way, unless you’re a fan of darts or KOEI’s games then Burnout is a must buy.

Number 6. It’s better than Need for Speed: Pro Street. In direct opposition to Burnout, EA’s Need for Speed: Pro Street’s developers took the game in the opposite direction and gave it a structured track approach. Boasting slicker visuals and the open ended gameplay that Need for Speed was once renowned for, Burnout Paradise will be sure to satisfy racer’s need for open-ended city based racing.

Number 5. Which leads us onto; Open-ended Burnout. This is one of the main reasons why we at Avid Gamer fell in love with the demo. You can go anywhere and do anything, when you want, how you want with no menu screens or loading. This is the 2008’s Test Drive Unlimited, but maxed up to 110%.

Number 4. Online multiplayer. Everything we ever dreamed for with previous Burnouts is here. Play against or with your friends to complete challenges or to become king of the streets. There are over 300 multiplayer challenges, races and events. If that’s not your cup of tea try and beat each other’s records or just sit down and enjoy the view while free burning. Joining a server is simple, with minimal lag and no waiting. It’s the way online gaming should be.

Number 3. Graphics. This game has finally stepped up and taken the bull by the horns; truly showing off the power of the next generation consoles. It’s a game with so much detail and shininess it’s actually difficult not to be impressed. Whether travelling at 200mph through alleyways or careening around a bend, shredding you’re tires it’s going to keep you graphic junkies delighted. Crashes are spectacular, with deformation and aerobics presenting in a devastating way. Even with all this going on the game still runs at a solid 60 frames per second.

Number 2. This is burnout! Where else can you send a car 200mph into a wall, crash and still laugh about it. Whether you’re a follower from its humble beginnings or a complete newcomer to the series it’s a game that takes itself with a pinch of salt, condemning realism in a sense and promoting speed. Ludicrously fast and ludicrously fun. It’s a game that where you’ll need matchsticks propping your eyelids ajar so you don’t blink. Burnout has always created fond memories and fingers crossed; Paradise will not disappoint.

Number 1. Bigger and better. With everyone other developer still trying to shake off those Christmas blues and actually try and finish their titles; Burnout comes and completely sets you up for January and far into next year. Whether a quick five minute session or an all nighter we’re sure it’s going to constantly entertain. With a pumping soundtrack and a huge, open ended city to explore Burnout offers more possibilities than any other game we’ve seen.
