i'm thinking about getting a psp very soon. What should i look for when buying my psp and what should i upgrade/downgrade it to to have the most options for playing homewbrew and original umds?

I've read several posts and it seems there are a few options and opinions for upgrades/downgrades and am trying to figure out what i need to look for to make the best of it. i saw on another site about a week ago that a psp could be used for gps navigation as well. if i had known these capabilities would be possible i would've bought one long ago.

Hi m.c, and welcome to Console-Spot. smile.gif

These days it doesn't really matter which PSP you get (new, old, slim, fat) as long as you can get hold of a Pandora's Battery to downgrade and install custom firmware on it.
Installing custom firmware (up to 3.71 M33-2) will let you play real UMDs, run homebrew, play ISOs of PSP and PS1 games, etc.

The easiest (and cheapest) way is to ask someone who has a homebrew-enabled PSP to make the Pandora's Battery (and Magic Memory stick) for you.
Otherwise, you can buy a Datel TOOL battery (I'm not sure if works for Slims, but I think it does) and get the memory stick files off the internet.

Right on, I bought mine used ($170) and it works great. I put CFW as soon as I knew what that was. If I were you I would get a slim, its a lot lighter and sleeker.

i thought slims wouldn't run everything, even with pandora's battery....??

The only thing Slims won't run (yet) is 1.50 kernel homebrew.
But a lot of homebrew is being recompiled for the 3.xx kernel (which the Slim supports).
Real PSP games work, as does PSP and PS1 ISOs.

cool. thx. what's the best way to find someone in D/FW area to do this for me and what's a 'reasonable' cost for doing so?

I don't know what "D/FW" means, but there are lists of people who will do it for you here and here.
Most of them just charge for postage, so the cost should be low.

just look for a used one in the best shape with the least scratches
God is my rock
I bought mine used and mine was practically new so I saved like $50 just because of that. Just try to turn it on, if you have a few to choose from, and go to settings and then to information and see what firmware it has on it. The lower it has the better so get the one with the lowest firmware if they let you turn it on. If you have someone that you know that has a homebrew capable psp then they can make you a pandora battery and then it doesn't matter what firmware it has on it. I say you should get a used one!
