As I was looking for a cheap PSP battery to create a Pandora battery, I began to wonder if the "knock-off" batteries would work. As I best understand it, the battery has to retain some sort of memory to apply a "kick" to get the PSP to load from the memory stick. Maybe I'm wrong. Any ideas? or what battery manufacturer should be or not be used?

Thanks!

Have a look at the Pandora's Battery battery compatibility list.
The Datel ones seem to be a safe bet.

If it hasn't been said before, this should close this thread for good.

You don't need another battery. In Create Pandora's battery program, either backup your battery eeprom or let pandora make a useable one after you are done with the downgrade. Plug in your power cord to boot the PSP after your downgrade, then you can change your Pandora's battery back to a normal battery.
