Sony Computer Entertainment president Kazuo Hirai has commented on the possible inclusion of rumble functionality in the PlayStation 3 Sixaxis pad, hinting that its current incarnation is far from that of the final model.
Speaking in a recent interview with Kikizo, Hirai stated,”it's something that we're obviously looking at, now that we've reached an agreement with Immersion. We're also looking at a variety of other things that we can incorporate with the controller, and we'll come out with announcements when we think we have the right mix of features for the PS3 controller.”
Hirai likened this to the evolution of the original PlayStation pad, and its subsequent transition into the Dual Shock controllers, indicating that the company has similar plans for the Sixaxis at some point in the future.
“I mean, as you know, that's also an evolving peripheral, if you will, in that we started out with the original PS1 controller with no analogue, and it's come all the way to this point, so obviously, as we go forward, it's not the final model for a PS3 controller, so we'll see what comes down the road", he said.
As it stands, the current Sixaxis pad is viewed as somewhat conspicuous in today’s market due to its omission of rumble feedback, instead incorporating new motion-sensing technology, allowing gamers to tilt the pad to manipulate various properties on-screen.
More as it develops.
