I recently got my PS3, and have already gotten sick of using the D-Pad and X button to type out every single damn letter. Instead of putting up with it, as using the PS3 for internet like I am now, typing can mean writing more than one word or phrase.
An easy solution to this is the USB Keyboard.

I was salvaging my old Win95 [Yes, its that old], and picked off a fully functional keyboard. It has a USB Connection [Suprise Surpise], so it works perfectly.
If you dont happen to have a spare computer keyboard lieing around, look into getting a PS2 Keyboard as it works the same thing. Just plug it into the PS3 Controller Port.

This saves alot of time and frustration while trying to type long text material.
