DVD up-scaling coming to PS3 says Phil Harrison
In an almost philosophical interview with GameDaily last week, SCE Worldwide Studios President Phil Harrison revealed that DVD up-scaling is a real possibility for PS3 in the future. He began by stating that Sony Computer Entertainment, for a while now, has been closed off to the public. Though he specifically mentions Japan, it seems like SCEI's global strategy in the past has been to never show off ideas in the making, but rather as Harrison puts it, "once it's perfect, we'll share it with everybody else."
He goes on to say, "We have become more comfortable in sharing our road map. We have to get more liberal in the ways we experiment with some things. Because some things that we think are important may not be important to our consumer."
To give a glimpse of Sony's new outlook on sharing their inner workings with the world, Harrison gives an example of how they might phrase the information they release. "We could say, 'You know, we're not sure when it's coming, but we're going to have DVD up-scaling on PlayStation 3.' There you go. There's a scoop for you."
Like Harrison explains, Sony in the past has indeed been quiet and conservative in regards to the ideas they are working on, are toying with, or simply dropped from speculation. The consumer would have very little idea of what Sony Computer Entertainment was actually planning, until that plan came to fruition. By stating that the Sony PS3 will have DVD up-scaling, it's just a matter of when, Harrison is giving PlayStation fans something to hope for in the near future. Here's to hoping that DVD up-scaling won't take too long to reach PS3 owners and that SCEI continues Phil's open and honest dialogue with its loyal customers.
