i bought a psp version 1.5 coz i've heard its the only version that you can play downloaded games. excited to play already, i also bought a UMD game (justice league heroes). when i got home i tried playing but my psp kept showing an error saying that i need to upgrade in order to play. so i upgraded from version 1.5 to 2.81 (not knowing that this is bad). the next morning i went to a local game shop which downloads ISO games to your memory stick for a fee, when i showed them mine they told me they need to downgrade it first to 1.5 then upgrade to 3.03 so that i can play both UMD and downloaded games. is this true? how safe is this process? has anyone tried this already? please help me out on this..
thanks in advance..

Yes they are telling you the truth. I am sorry to say this bluntly but goin from 1.5 to 2.8 was a very retarded move.....BUT...they are telling you the truth, you need to downgrade to 1.5 and then to 3.03OE-C. And its a pretty safe process anymore. There is always a chance when flashing that you might brick your psp but overall anymore its flawless.
Please let us know if you need anymore help and we can help you downgrade instead of paying someone else.

Yes you can run homebrew apps. The PS1 emulator is bulit-into 3.03 OE-C.

so which one is better 1.5 or 3.03fw? i'm still confused because 3.03 is the highest custom fw that lets you run UMDs, homebrew apps and games yet all of my friends are still using 1.5fw

3.03 OE-X is not the highest custom firmware, the latest so far is 3.10 OE-A'. I would recommend you to get an easy installer to upgrade to 3.03 OE-C as it's the most popular firmware so far eventhough few of new games may only work with 3.10 OE-A'. You don't have to use devhook to run your games and homebrew, psx games, network browser, emulator....(more)supported, so I don't see any reason why you still keep the 1.5fw. In fact there's a recovery mode to downgrade your custom firmware to 1.5Fw if your PSP is partially brick cause of some FW problem or maybe you don't like the custom firmware(I know you won't).
