planning to buy a psp...been reading some of the posts and I'm a bit confused as to the difference between devhook and dark alex's SC(?)...if I want to run games from the memory stick, which do I need?
Also, how much memory card space do the games themselves take (when playing from the card)?
Thanks.

OK, what you've been hearing about is DevHook and Dark_AleX's 2.71 SE-C Custom Firmware.
Both let you run games from the memory stick.
To use either of these, you need a PSP with 2.71 firmware or below.
To use 2.71 SE-C, you need a PSP which does not have a TA-082 motherboard:
http://www.maxconsole.net/content_img/ta82spot.jpgAbout the size of games, they are generally below 1GB (around 400 to 800 MB), but can be up to 1.8GB.
Therefore I would recommend getting a 4GB memory stick.

I see, so both serve the same purpose. What are the main advantages of one over the other?
As for the games, I also heard that it runs faster when in the memory card than from a UMD. But it seems it takes up a lot of space...it's possible to just have a copy of the game in my computer and copy which one I want to play in my memory card, right? And just repeat the process? And for the save games, how much memory do these take-up?
Thanks for all the help.

1.5 (devhook) can play all the homebrew that is out. However, when playing ISOs, devhook requires you to have a UMD in the drive. There is more customization allowed at 1.5
2.71 se-* can play ISOs off the XMB (as opposed to running devhook everytime you want to play an ISO), and it doesn't need a UMD to play them. However, 2.71 is not as customizable and can't play 100% of all the homebrews (it can play around 99.999%).

Although now 2.71 in Ta-082 is ok to play ISO but some new requires 2.81 cannot be played , I've tested the new ones and it cannot be run in the Ta-082. So it think the HEND will be able to handle it.
So for the suggestion in buying which model , first you must see your budget , secondly you want to buy new or second hand , thirdly what you want to use your psp for eg: surf net , play iso or homebrew or mp4 player etc .. all these features ... buy version 1.5 you can do everything hehehe.

i strongly advised getttin the 4gb memory stick. u can fit all ur isos n music, pix, n videos without worry 2 much about it. itz best purpose is 4 isos since they're fairly large depending on the game.

Osiron,
what do you mean by Devhook needing a UMD in the drive? Any UMD will do (maybe just so the system recognizes theres a disc inside)?
kkysnoopy,
Yep, I plan to do all those things:) so knowing this, if I get 1.5 firmware, I'll be using devhook? since, I believe the Dark alex is a downgrader for 2.71 firmware. Is this correct?
Thanks!

A follow-up question...
between devhook and dark alex, which can allow me to play more games (even the latest ones requiring firmware higher than 2.71)?

Dark_AleX is the name of a person.
He has produced many homebrew apps, including a downgrader and custom firmware.

DevHook 0.51 allows you to play the most games.
However, I think that you can run DevHook 0.51 via 2.71 SE-C, so you can get the benefits of both.

Yup firmware 1.5 can play more newer games than the Ta-082 . If you asked me which one should I give up , I'll say I'll sell away Ta-082 and keep my firmware 1.5 psp.
I have not tried Devhook 0.51 but I'm using Devhook 0.46 to play all my ISOs which is Devhook 0.46 Enabler for Ta-082 and Devhook 0.46 for firmware 1.5 . Cool . U asked my why I need 2 psp , initially I bought Ta-082 and the HenB or Henc or HenD was not out yet , so I cannot play anything except original UMDS. So desperate and bought the Firmware 1.5 . So ended with 2 psps =P .
If you want to save $$ , try buy secondhand posted everywhere . Look for brand new non-ta082 psp any firmware except higher than 2.8 . This way you can download to 1.5 and play whatever you want because 1.5 can emulate everything you dreamed of .
I'm waiting for somebody genius to emulate PS one in our dream machine . Anybody heard any breakthrough news about play ps one games in psp ?
Wow ..... I've owned my psp for 1 year and still not bored me yet. cool.

Thanks, guys. Actually found a person who's selling a psp which can already play ISOs (probably installed some of things we've talled about). So the only thing I want to do before I buy is to try out different games which run in different firmwares to test it out.
Any suggestions as to which games to try out? probably a new one that runs in 3+ firmware and maybe something older(? or will this automatically run if 3+ runs?)?
Thanks.

Just found out that the Psp for sale is a ta-082...
I checked what it has installed is HEND and devhook 4.0(?)...it can play need for speed from the memory card (with any umd in the drive). So this means if I buy it, as opposed to a non-TA-082, I'll be able to play older games but not the newest ones (ones that require firmware 3+), right?
Sad...

Hmm, wait...or will I still be able to run all games that a non-TA-082 can run BUT not ALL homebrew?
What about for the internet browser and watching movies/playing music?
If I can run all the games, (even if not all homebrew) and use the browser and media player without any problems...I might just settle for a TA-082...
