One of the reasons PSP homebrew has been so successful is the tweaking of Devhook, allowing gamers to utilize otherwise untouchable features of PSP, such as overclocking its processor, which runs the battery faster but increases the frame rate substantially in many games. Someone in the community obtaining an official development kit would make the situation even stickier for Sony.
They almost did. An eBay auction apparently advertising a legitimate development tool. Bidding had reached $329.00 before the auction became publicized via PSP3D, prompting Sony to bring it down. The curious can check out a Screen Capture of the auction before it disappeared.
Chances are it would have gone for much more had the auction played itself out, but with hackers already emulating PSP's 3.01 firmware via Devhook, they don't have much to worry about.
