Contradicting a frightening report from Games Radar, Sony will be providing a program to replace wireless PlayStation 3 controllers when their batteries eventually render them useless. The Games Radar report had previously stated that gamers would be forced to spend their hard-earned money to purchase a brand new PS3 pad.

Thankfully, a Sony spokesperson told GI, “This is a purely speculative story and is largely untrue. The latest generation of Lithium Polymer batteries hardly suffer any memory effect at all, so it’ll be many years before there’s any degradation in terms of battery performance.”

The spokesperson went on to say, “When and if this happens, then of course we will be providing a service to exchange these items.” However, it’s still unclear whether this service will be completely free or at a reduced cost to to the consumer. A brand new Sixaxis controller will cost $49.99 in North America.
