Your PSP will still have 1.5 firmware, if that's what you meant about redownloading firmware.
So you don't need to redowngrade.

About the homebrew, which apps did you have on there?
If you're looking for DevHook; you can use this:

Thanks for that I have now tried this 3 times, and every time I do it , I cannot see the dev hook where it was originally, so i reboot the PSP then the PSP come up saying the memory stick cannto be read you need to format it, and this warning does nto go away until I format it,

Also when i copied the directoerys accross to my psp it says I have only 50 meg left out of a 2 gig memory stick

Finaly tried again and as soon as I have copied the data accross pressed circle to come out of it , i then check for dev hook which is not there so i reboot the psp and again it says i need to format the memory card

I am thinking of jsut upgrading and buy the games save a lot of hassle i think

It might save hassle, but you won't be able to make use of any homebrew.
Once you get DevHook set up you can still buy the games and use DevHook to emulate 2.71 firmware and play your real UMD.
It sounds like that your memory card has a problem, the files in the package don't even take up 50MB, let alone 1950MB.
In that case, you may need a new memory card for your save games anyway.
Maybe you could try formatting it from your PC (instead of from your PSP).
