Optimus Prime

Genre: Soccer
Number of Players: 2

Konami’s Winning Eleven has often been the soccer game of choice. It’s in a league of its own in terms of realism, physics and strategy. Konami keeps tweaking the game with every installment making each game better than the last. The transition to PSP is a fairly bumpy one but the core of the gameplay does remain.

Goals are scored through proper passing and team work and trying to find an opening in the defense and not one man showdowns. There are plenty of moves to learn and you’ll need to master them to really blast the competition. It feels less intuitive on the PSP but is fairly good nonetheless. As always the game is still not fully licensed but does add a couple more licensed teams to the mix (Arsenal. Chelsea).

The presentation has been fixed up with the menus sporting a much nicer look and being easier to navigate than in previous games. Graphics in-game are fairly detailed and contain nice player animations. They don’t really push the PSP but than again, Winning Eleven was never about graphics.

There is no commentary in the game at all, but the crowd and ambience do a good job of recreating the atmosphere. The crowd react fairly well to what’s going on and it does a better job than FIFA overall.

What’s frustrating is the omission of the Master League mode as well as the load times which should be better. All you’re left with is a quick game mode and a league mode in which you create your own league and choose which teams compete. This lack of game modes hurts the game and doesn’t give any real incentive for casual gamers to master the mechanics in Winning Eleven 9.

The game really shines in multiplayer and is great fun against another friend with a PSP. Hours can be spent battling your friends and annoying them with your soccer skills. Unfortunately the game does not support infrastructure multiplayer.

Winning Eleven 9, like almost all first entry PSP games, has some flaws that should have been fixed up before release. The load times and the exclusion of the master league mode bring down the whole experience. It is the best soccer game on PSP and we hope that Konami fixes the flaws in the next installment.

You should be happy the game didnt turn out like fifa for psp... i grabbed the iso to compare it to my original WE9 and fifa is the WORST football game i have ever played. I still enjoy playing a game of sensible soccer but fifa is painful to play. bad camera angles, aweful graphics, stupid emphasis on in game music with the slider that pops up every time a new track plays, it gets in the way obscuring the screen.

WE9 hit the nail right on the head, once your at the top you can only come down but these guys know how to stay on top!
