Anyone who has both a Japan PSP-1000[K] and the US PSP-1001[K]?
Are they both Made in Japan?
Rumor: PSP's outside of Japan would eventually be made in China.
Are both screen qualities exactly the same?
Rumor: Sharp and Samsung made LCD's for the PSP. Made in Japan PSP's received the Sharp while everyone else receives crap.
Comment: I actually read somewhere that Sony outsourced the LCD screen and Sharp and Samsung were the suppliers of the LCD's that were under the exact same specifications.
Are there anything the Japan PSP is capable of that the US cannot do?
Rumor: The Japan PSP is the only one with the ability to play games region free.
Comment: That would be a really stupid thing to do on Sony's behalf.
Anymore?

That one is totally off.
I can see the PS1 part maybe, since there was this stage where Sony were looking for recruits who have experience in writing emulators. They were probably thinking of writing a emulator for the PSP to play PS1 games. Not sure though.

Dunno if you'd call some of those rumours. More like idiots who don't know what they're talking about. The screen thing is true but the samsung ones arent as crap as everyone thinks, they are the biggest maker of LCDs. And the whole made in china versus made in Japan? I don't think its a big deal this day an age. The quality of chinese products have gone up and japanese products have gone down. I couldn't care less whether my PSP was made in China or Japan, as long as it works.

You know that was what I thought about the people who came up with those ideas.
Well like I said about the LCD's, they are both made under the same specifications. Sony just outsourced the factories to Sharp and Samsung to supply them the resources.
Either way I'm still wondering if they are being made in China yet.

Yeah even with the same specs people say the sharp screen is brighter. I had both the sharp and samsung screen PSP but not at the same time so I can't tell. All I know is I had 2 lit pixels with my sharp and a perfect screen with the samsung, so I'm happy. Plus the US PSP feels much more sterdy and not like its going to fall apart which the Jap one felt like.

Yup, same with the Coca-Cola PSP. [I think all PSP's built with 1.5+ were done with more care.]
Just for the purpose of busting the Sharp vs. Samsung PSP LCD. How would I know I got am buying Samsung screen?

I guess if it's about the brightness, could it be the "light" being used is just poor in quality in some cases.
So optimus your US PSP is made in Japan then?

Yeah my US and Jap were made in Japan. And if Japan means quality I'd say the Jap PSP felt like it was made in Mexico or something.
LCD screens are rated how good they are by they're response time and luminescense I think it is aka brightness. So the response time is exactly the same the only thing that could be different is the brightness of the LCD screen which is what people are raving about. I dunno, the samsung screen looks pretty nice to me. Maybe If I had them side by side, I'd see a difference.

optimusprime, was your Japan PSP one of the first series with 1.0?

Yeah they are crappy

So you did right in getting another and selling the old one. I'm keeping mine for use and abuse.

I guess we would need them side by side, but you cannot compare using a old PSP as the light does wear out over time and isn't as bright as one that is opened on the spot.

Yeah my Jap PSP was one of the first 1 million. I got it in January so it was one of the very early ones. 2 pixels lit up after a week which was weird, when I got it it was perfect. That pissed me off. The D-pad kept squeeking (dunno how to spell it) all the time which was driving me nuts. The UMD drive sometimes would say disc error when trying to start a game which also scared me into selling LOL. The L and R buttons didn't click in very well but at least I didn't have the circle button problem.

I had four PSP's in January. It was for some people who wanted it. Each time I was able to check them, there were 3 near perfects and 1 which was perfect in design but faulty in LCD.
Common faults in them I guess was the L and R buttons can get stuck if you press the area towards the inside. None of the four I had had the Square problem.
I fixed the squeeking directional pad, it was just through alot of usage. Some thing else I also found was that the dust between the screen on some of them were annoying.
Anyway they are all functional for gaming so it's alright. [Not sure really since they are not with me anyway haha.] The one with heaps of dead pixels was the first one I opened and was like "Wow those dead pixels thing was true, didn't know it was this bad." the others had no dead pixels, some had dust.
So why did you choose for a US PSP instead of just a newer JP PSP?

Oh GOD that would have been crazy if the psp would have read the regular sized cd/dvd roms that would have kind of made the portable part that much less well portable.

yeah I meant square button problem. Hm? I wanted an english box and manual

was the main reason.
HAHA discman sized PSP. That would be fun to hold eh?
Shihiko
Aug 15 2005, 08:24 PM
I would have thought they would just allow you to copy the disc onto the Memorystick and the emulator will play it? Though we all know that would just be stupid as some people would just play old PSone games until the cows come home.

That reminds me. My manual and most of the PSP gear apart from the case is still in the value pack box. Unopened.
Didn't think the manual was needed to operate the machine

. Do they remove the Asian languages in the US version?
Optimus Prime
Aug 15 2005, 08:31 PM
nah but I like having everything

Can't remeber but there are heaps of languages. Will have to check.
Shihiko
Aug 15 2005, 08:34 PM
Anyhow, I'm sure there are US PSPs with the Sharp LCD as well. So chances of being able to check might be pretty slim, no one wants to take apart their PSP to check what company made their LCD.

I forgot to check mine when I took it apart.
Optimus Prime
Aug 15 2005, 08:36 PM
You took yours apart? Heard its a bitch to pull apart. I wouldn't mind to get some of the dust specs out
Shihiko
Aug 15 2005, 08:41 PM
I wouldn't recommend taking it apart, it takes a long time to get it back together as the dust just keeps getting in there some how. Even if you follow the people who said you show do it in the bathroom where there is less dust, there is still dust originally on the PSP itself and while you close the screen section the pressure causes them to appear.

But if you really want to take it apart, I recommend obtaining some of those static clothes to pick up the dust. The plastic used on the PSP seems really easily scratched on the inside, I lightly touched it with my nail and well there is a scratch on the screen from the inside. [Not the LCD.] If you have a compressed air gun that is handy too.
Most annoying to take off was the Warranty VOID sticker.
Optimus Prime
Aug 15 2005, 08:44 PM
LOL usually those warranty stickers just fall off by themselves
