We've known for a while that something has been vaguely intended along these lines, but here ya go:

New comments from Sony exec suggest possible EyeToy style add-on in the works

Following on from the addition of a web browser and wireless photo sharing in a recent software update to the PSP, Sony is now considering a host of new functionality for the console - which may include the introduction of a camera.

Speaking to Japanese magazine Famitsu in an interview partially translated by US website GameSpot, SCE software platform development boss Izumi Kawanishi revealed that he is currently planning a new style of messaging application for the PSP.

"We're currently considering [the implementation of an e-mail system], but we want to think over the fundamental concept behind e-mail," he commented. "We think it would be great if people could communicate together with the use of video and voice."

In order to achieve this, the PSP would have to be equipped with a camera and microphone - leading to the conclusion that Sony must be considering the creation of an EyeToy style peripheral for the system.

Another key new piece of functionality which is planned for introduction on the PSP in the near future is support for streaming video off the internet - allowing users to watch movies without having to save them to Memory Stick - and digital rights management (DRM) technology which will pave the way for paid-for content on the system.

Until DRM is in place on PSP, few media publishers are likely to allow their content to be distributed in PSP-friendly formats online, which will reduce the potential usefulness of the device as a portable media centre.

I think their voice email idea is good, because it's a pain to type the emails in the PSP. wink.gif

The problem with that then becomes compatibility between other non-PC email clients. They'll all handle normal text email, how many other PDA-like devices (I'm gonna include the PSP in this case) support AV playback from an E-Mail?

Bit tricky to archive for searching purposes too wink.gif

hmm... maybe itll be sent as an attachment or something..? :S dunno

maybe not conferencing but i definatly dont see why a psp couldnt play audio or video messages as it plays frikkin movies. not like anyone is gonna talk in 7.1 with widescreen, though looking at the psp dont see why they cant. keep low enough to handle anything that can even show email with options to go as high as you know the opposing end has......sadly i know its gonna be latest firmware update added to it. so i might not even have a chance to use it.

Heh, portable viagra advertisment reception - Useful! wink.gif

Here's hoping they make it secure enough that that isn't a problem. It'll probably work like MSN or something. Should be entertaining, of course, it's still only useful if you have an open WiFi near wherever you are. This means anywhere where I have access to the router, i.e. - Home or work in which case, I'll just use the computer. Bound to be plenty of peeps that actually can use it in the wild though.

A pain until the portable psp keyboard is being released.
