Why are they more expensive then the dvd's? I mean, I'd love to get starship troopers or Super troopers but theyre 10 more fore a PSP game.

They just are, i guess Sony controls the prices instead of other companies since they own the UMD format (just a guess about the Sony owning the format).

I think they cost more because most people don't have a portable DVD player and a psp would be the easiest way to watch movies on the road.

Of course, the benefit of having the DVD if you _did_ have a portable player is that you can watch it on a proper TV as well with decent sound. UMD prices are ridiculous. Low resolution movies with stereo sound. Admittedly they seem to be a much _better_ price over here, RRP of NZ$25-$30 which isn't too bad.
Economics comes into play as well. How many times more DVDs of a given title sell compared to the same movie on UMD? The higher the demand, the lower the price can be to still make a viable profit. With UMDs the demand just isn't there, whether or not it will be remains to be seen, but even a few thousand of a title selling isn't very enticing to the studios so the price stays high until they deem it worth lowering.
Bit of a Catch-22, DVDs have come down a bit in price since they arrived 5-6 years ago. Over here at least they were all $40-$50 initially, that quickly dropped to around $35ish. Now they're usually $34.95 at most for a normal single disk movie. Anything that wasn't a huge blockbuster is often $24.95.
(USD is about 2/3 of our NZD, do the maths)
