I would have to say that the umd looks better but it really depends on the movie since some umd movies aren't as high quality as others. But the psp 9 only looks good if u set the vid at a high quality which makes yourvid larger and isnt worth it. But i really dont like psp9 i use max media

yea, I don't like PSP video 9 either. I use 3GP Converter. It's free and SO simple.
*NOTE TO USERS* If ANY of my download links are not working, to better serve the PSP-SPOT community, PLEASE PM me so I can try to put them up again. Thank you.

Where can you find the free version of the 3GP Converter that converts to mpeg 4? And what exactly is "3GP"...? Is that some kind of video format like mpeg or AVI???

Yeah, even though I haven't used any other video encoder for PSP other than Video9, I stand by it. I've done quite a bit of encoding with Virtual Dub, so it was pretty much the same stuff. I found the setting I like the best which is good quality, but small in filesize. Basically it cuts the file down 75%, but still looks good.

have you guys ever tried PSP Movie Creator? http://www.pqdvd.com/psp/
I have tried all of them and I like this one the best, it gives me options that I cannot find on any of the others, and it rips whole DVD's. Oh BTW I used some HD source material and cranked this puppy up to it's highest, the PQ was exactly as good as a UMD
but it also used MS space just like a UMD
Basicaly if you had 1.8 GB of MS space you could get a movie to look exactly like UMD if you use this program.
BTW please read the manual, there is a good amount of options.

The problem with that is that the Creator version is commercial. Video-Express (http://www.pqdvd.com/psp/video_converter.html) is the free version with a couple of the useful features disabled. It isn't too bad although it has a few functionality quirks.

I don't have any UMD movies so i am not to sure. But i guess UMD video is better quality than a downlaod. but it depends on the rip.
